Telenet Shooting Collection compiles some forgotten ’90s shmups – Destructoid

PC Engine Memories Japanese studio Edia has announced that it is currently developing retro compilation Telenet Shooting Collection for Nintendo Switch. The compendium features a small handful of shmups that jetted out of developer Telenet Japan in the early ’90s, finding an audience on Sega Mega Drive and PC Engine. The new collection is the spearhead of a project by Edia to archive the works of Telenet Japan, a developer/publisher that produced a huge library of games for the console era’s formative years. From arcade…

In The 90s, Superboy Was Meant To Lose His Virginity To Knockout

| Next year, DC Comics is giving the nineties Superboy, Conner Kent, clone of Superman and Lex Luthor, celebrating his thirtieth year of existence, his own series. And in a website article by Joshua Lapin-Bertone promoting said nineties series, have dubbed him "The Twink Of Steel" in a mailshot that went out to DC Comics subscribers, reported by Bleeding Cool yesterday. The article reads; Years before he took the name Kon-El or Conner, Superboy operated out of Hawaii. At the time this story was published, the Boy of…

DC Comics Embossed Foil 90s Variants Covers Have A Price Problem

| DC Comics is publishing embossed foil variant covers of some of their titles in a celebration of nineties comics cover excess. But what they also have done is introduced the same kind of uncertainty that those covers brought. Retailers tell me that the foil covers of this week's Joker and Batman comic books have no price printed on them. Some retailers mistook the $5.99 price on the order form as the price of the comic book, instead it is the price that retailers were charged. No retail price has been listed for this…

V/H/S/99 directors on making horror movies set in the ’90s

2022 has been the year of horror, with a number of original theatrical movies like Smile, franchise reboots like Scream, and legacy sequels like Halloween Ends topping the box office chats and delighting fans of the genre everywhere. Streaming is no different, with Hellraiser on Hulu and Orphan: First Kill on Paramount+ finding their audiences in living rooms across America. A new entry to 2022’s list of horror hits is V/H/S/99, the fifth entry in the young franchise that just became Shudder’s most streamed movie…

Running SerenityOS, a love letter to ’90s user interfaces

I have always loved messing around with operating systems and desktop environments. I believe my first graphical operating system was AmigaOS. In the decades since I have worked through various Windows versions, every version of macOS since 7.0, different Linux flavors and combinations, and many other small niche OSs I have forgotten about in a sea of windows and menus. In an alternative (maybe future?) life, I would like to have created fictional user interfaces for movies, TV shows, and games. One of my favorite books is…

Pavement review – 90s indie giants defy slacker reputation with high energy and deep cuts | Pavement

When 90s US indie outfit Pavement announced they were re-forming again for dates this year, it marked a decade since their last re-formation, and 20 years since their original split. They’ve released no new material in between, and have always been known for their tensions and resentments: the last show of their first phase, in 1999, involved singer Stephen Malkmus hanging handcuffs from the mic stand and declaring “these symbolise what it’s like being in a band”. So it was easy to chalk it up as another cynical cash-grab…

Purple Beatz review – 90s drum’n’bass London gets the Hollyoaks treatment | Film

That “z” in the title is a bad sign: shoved in out of desperation to denote this film as young, diverse and urban. In fact, Purple Beatz plays out like a post-watershed episode of Hollyoaks, with less depth and artistic flair. It stars Izzy Jones as Sarah-Jane, an aspiring singer who, after moving to London from Bournemouth, finds love and success until a nasty record producer messes things up. Despite the best efforts of Jones and Steven Michael-O’Hara, who plays love interest Airbeats, the barebones script gives them…

‘No one felt guilty about having fun’ – Sadie Frost on the 90s, Dracula and turning her back on Hollywood | Sadie Frost

In the pub, in a village so quaint it has a duck pond and jars of homemade pickled onions for sale outside cottages, they are talking about the celebrity who has moved in nearby. At least one customer does a comedy double-take when, five minutes later, Sadie Frost walks in. For it is she – actor, fashion designer, 90s cool girl turned director, sausage dog owner and now countryside dweller.Frost and Cherry the dog moved here in the summer, to a cottage with a perfect thatched roof and views across the hills. She still has…
