The best Mario games of all time, ranked

Nintendo’s Super Mario series is so monumental to the medium of video games that you might even think of the mustachioed plumber when you hear “video games” mentioned at all. From his earliest days as “Jumpman” battling Donkey Kong, to his latest adventures on the Nintendo Switch, to his latest movie appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario has consistently been one of the greatest characters in video games. He’s such an iconic character that countless video games have had him as the star, and we attempted to…

The best video game remakes of all time

There are so many classic games from the past that have become difficult for new players to experience. The farther away in time we get from these games’ releases, the more difficult it can get to not only get the game itself but also the extra hardware needed to play them. That alone is a major barrier that turns people away from playing games many consider to be some of the greatest of all time. And that’s not even taking into account dated graphics, controls, and mechanics. Remakes offer a new generation a chance…

The best video games of March 2023

It’s not October, but we just had a very good month for horror games. From the indie scene to AAA and from VR to a traditional gaming experience, fans of scary games had a lot to enjoy in March 2023. Of course, there was the highly anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4, one of the best horror games of all time, and it didn’t disappoint. Keeping up the scares were experimental horror games like Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo and Dredge, while The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR affirmed why virtual…

The Lamplighters League is a pulp spy movie turned tactics game

I’m a sucker for a tactics game built around a setting that’s atypical for the genre. For instance, I was a fan of Paradox Interactive’s Empire of Sin in 2020, which turned prohibition-era mob management into a tactical strategy RPG. So it’s no surprise that I’m already digging The Lamplighters League and the Tower at the End of the World. Developed by Harebrained Schemes, the unusual game draws on pulp spy thrillers. It follows a ragtag team of 1930s misfits traveling across the globe to thwart a cult’s nefarious…

These were the best games we played at GDC 2023

While E3 might be gaming’s version of the Super Bowl, I always have more fun exploring the Game Developers Conference. The show is the best way to understand the state of games because it gives creators and fans alike access to insightful panels and a show floor full of games to try. For press, the event is even larger. In addition to the demos at the show proper, developers tend to flood in from around the world to show their games in hotel suites around San Francisco. The entire city turns into a haven for creative…

Many people credit the Resident Evil games with the birth of the survival-horror genre in video games. From spinoffs to sequels to remakes, sifting through all the Resident Evil games can be a challenge. If you’ve never played one before, you want to make sure you start with the right game.  Everyone might have their own ideas about the “best” or “worst” Resident Evil games, but we’ve done our best to rank the games in the series for you. Keep in mind that we’ll only consider games with “Resident Evil” in the title,…

The best indie games on Nintendo Switch

Although the Nintendo Switch has some of the best AAA titles, the system has become known as an indie machine to many people. The portability of the Switch and Switch Lite makes them ideal for some of the best indie games, and dozens of small developers seem to love releasing their games on the hybrid console. Better yet, plenty of previously released indie games, such as Hollow Knight, have received increased attention and acclaim after landing on the Switch. It’s become a win-win for developers and Switch owners.…

Mina the Hollower is a pixel-perfect homage to Link’s Awakening

Developer Yacht Club Games first made a name for itself with its indie hit Shovel Knight, an homage to classic 2D side-scrollers. Now, the studio is out to prove that lightning can strike twice with its next title, Mina the Hollower. Like Shovel Knight, it’s a bit of a throwback to an older era of games. This time, though, Yacht Club pays tribute to the Game Boy Color to create its own challenging riff on The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. I went hands-on with a demo of Mina the Hollower at this year’s Game…

Sonic Frontiers gets its first wave of free DLC this week

Sonic Frontiers will receive its first of three planned updates on Wednesday, March 22. The free DLC — dubbed Sights, Sound, and Speed — has a load of new features, including Photo Mode, Jukebox, and new challenge modes. Sega previously detailed its plans to support Sonic Frontiers in the long term last November, but it didn’t share a timeline for when the updates were coming. Now that first wave is finally here, giving the game it’s first significant update since it launched last year. Photo Mode can be…
