Littleton City Council bans retail sale of cats and dogs

Littleton recently passed a law banning the retail sale of cats and dogs, joining fifteen other Colorado cities in a bid to decrease commercial breeding operations, according to the Best Friends group. The ordinance, which passed the Littleton City Council with a unanimous vote on March 5, was first introduced in January and follows a slew of similar attempts to increase animal welfare in Colorado after the state’s “puppy mill” bill, or Humane Pet Act, failed to pass in 2020. The bill would have established standards for…

Colorado’s auto insurance rates among highest-rising in country

Kyle Shirley put off a marketing plan for his roofing company after insurance premiums for his work trucks shot up 55%. Becky Brinkerhoff’s insurance bill has doubled and she is checking with other companies for a better deal. Stephanie Rankin will likely reduce the coverage on one of her vehicles to help cover the 44% increase in her insurance rates. The three Denver-area residents are among Coloradans reeling from rising auto insurance costs on top of higher grocery bills and other expenses. The insurance rates are…

Colorado’s Front Range ranks high in hail damage

Colorado’s Front Range faces a risk of hail damage unlike any other area in the country, and it also happens to bewhere homeowners have installed solar panels on their roofs at some of the highest rates, according to a study from Roof Gnome, a platform that connects consumers with roofing and solar installation contractors. The combination can be a costly one when storms do hit and a contributor to rising home insurance premiums in the region. “Hail accumulation is an uncommon phenomenon but is most prevalent along the…

Craft breweries tap suburbs south of Denver

Since the founding of Parker’s Downhill Brewing in 2017, owners Jake Minturn and Doug Hyndman always planned to expand to multiple locations. By then, the craft beer market had matured enough the duo felt they couldn’t rely on the production and distribution model. Instead, they tried to build a welcoming space — and one with a vibe that could be replicated in new places. After years of searching, Minturn and Hyndman finally found their ideal spot. Downhill Brewing’s second location in Greenwood Village opened at 9672 E.…

Ana’s Norwegian Bakeri closes 16th Street Mall, Centennial shops

Ana Fanakra sat in her bakery on the 16th Street Mall on what turned out to be its last day in business, Feb. 3, waiting for customers. But not many came, and she decided to close up early. “We had really low sales that day,” she said. “We hadn’t even made $100 yet, which was a very accurate picture of what the last couple of months looked like for us.” The next day, she decided to call it quits, closing both the original location of Ana’s Norwegian Bakeri, which opened in Centennial in June 2021, and the downtown bakery,…
