Why Steve Martin Picked Steep Canyon Rangers As His Backing Band

It’s about 2,100 miles from Graham Sharp’s home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina to the bright lights, incessant noise, and chaos of humanity along the Las Vegas Strip. Tonight, Sharp and his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, will take the stage in front of a packed house at the Encore Theater in the Wynn. “It doesn’t feel strange to me — we kind of ate everything up one bite at a time,” the banjoist and de facto front man tells Rolling Stone backstage. “One little thing led to another and…

Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande review – the second life of a cruelly ignored UK funk band | Film

This documentary is an education and a good-news story about the remarkable 70s British funk band Cymande (the word is a calypso term for “dove”) who should be as big as Earth Wind & Fire, but aren’t. Or at least not yet. Their talent allowed them to transcend the racism and dullness of Britain’s cultural scene in the days of the Edward Heath government, recording three albums and becoming the first British band to headline New York’s Apollo Theatre during a heady US tour. But back in dreary Blighty, no TV programme…

Enter Shikari review – sensory overload by a British band hitting the big leagues | Music

“We are going in hard,” Rou Reynolds declares during …Meltdown, ushering in gut-rattling bass wobbles that make this cavernous arena feel more like the deepest belly of a warehouse rave. Enter Shikari are a rock band in the broadest sense – moshpits break out instantly – but their trademark is a zealous fusion of dubstep, emo and electro tied up in sociopolitical commentary of varying efficacy. The St Albans quartet have a catalogue that varies so liberally that, for every song you swerve, there’s another that might be…

Wayne Kramer, the co-founder of the protopunk Detroit band the MC5 that thrashed out such hardcore anthems as “Kick Out the Jams” and influenced everyone from the Clash to Rage Against the Machine, has died. He was 75. Kramer died Friday at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, according to Jason Heath, a close friend and executive director of Kramer’s nonprofit Jail Guitar Doors. Heath said the cause of death was pancreatic cancer. From the late 1960s to early 1970s, no band was closer to the…

Wayne Kramer, co-founder of rock band MC5, dies aged 75 | Music

Wayne Kramer, the guitarist who co-created MC5 – one of the rawest, most influential and politically engaged bands in US history – has died aged 75. His Instagram page announced the news: “Wayne S Kramer. Peace be with you. April 30 1948 – February 2 2024.”Born and raised in Detroit, Kramer teamed with teenage friend and fellow guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith, each of them influenced as much by free jazz as they were by R&B and rock’n’roll. Along with the frontman Rob Tyner, they made MC5 into an incendiary force in…

The Last Dinner Party: Prelude to Ecstasy review – the year’s most hyped band totally deliver | The Last Dinner Party

It’s hard to think of the last time a band elected to open their debut album with an orchestral overture. But that’s how the Last Dinner Party’s debut begins: woodwind, brass and strings turned up to 11, further decorated with crashing cymbals and shimmering harp. It’s so grandiose, even the director of a 1950s Hollywood blockbuster would have suggested his soundtrack composer dial it down a bit. It’s also bold to the point of seeming faintly provocative, but then if you were in the Last Dinner Party, you’d probably be…
