Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger review – Scorsese’s guide to cinema greats | Berlin film festival 2024

The work of film-makers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger is discussed with passion and authority by Martin Scorsese in this richly enjoyable documentary, for which he presents his thoughts and recollections directly to camera. When the British establishment shamed itself by turning its back on these homegrown masters, it took this Italian American film-maker to rediscover them in the 1970s – and now the Powell/Pressburger films almost cannot be seen except through the medium of Scorsese’s glorious evangelism; their…

‘How do I know these words?’: philosophical cocaine hippo is star of Berlin film festival | Berlin film festival 2024

Some facts about Pepe are certain. He was heavy even for his thick-set genus, reported to have weighed between four and five tonnes. With a land speed of up to 22 mph and ivory stakes protruding from those pink gums at random angles, he was a forceful reminder that his species is one of the deadliest on the planet, causing an estimated 500 human deaths per year.Native to sub-Saharan Africa but born in Colombian cocaine king Pablo Escobar’s private menagerie and shot in its vicinity after escaping from captivity in 2009,…

Sterben (Dying) review – the biggest conductor meltdown since Cate Blanchett’s Tár | Berlin film festival 2024

Matthias Glasner’s epic is a black comedy of Franzenesque family dysfunction; maybe not profound exactly but terrifically watchable and entertaining. It is about the time-honoured subject of what we inherit from our parents and what is gained and lost by rejecting that inheritance. The film features that always formidable German actor Lars Eidinger as an orchestra conductor - and it will be no surprise that when he takes to the podium at the Berlin Philharmonic, it is the scene of the biggest and most embarrassing fiasco…

Sasquatch Sunset review – Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg suit up for ingenious Bigfoot comedy | Berlin film festival 2024

The Zellner brothers, David and Nathan, take their absurdism and futurism to the next level with a brilliant and radical comedy about the secret life of the legendary Sasquatch, AKA Bigfoot, creatures rumoured to be living in the North American wilderness. Sasquatch Sunset is a film to compare with Planet of the Apes, or Watership Down, or even the days of silent cinema. Nonverbal cinema anyway. It’s a plaintive, echoing wail of fear in that big empty forest where no one is around to hear a falling tree; fear of climate…

Pussy Riot Protest Alexei Navalny’s Death at Russian Embassy in Berlin

Pussy Riot called Vladimir Putin and the Russian government “murderers” at a protest Sunday in Germany following the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The group’s creator Nadya Tolokonnikova and fellow members of the protest and performance art collective staged the demonstration outside the Russian embassy in Berlin, where a makeshift memorial to Navalny was placed. “We came with one simple word – ‘MURDERERS’ He did not just die. He was murdered,” Tolokonnikova said in a statement Sunday of Navalny,…

Hors du Temps (Suspended Time) review – lockdown memoir revives childhood bliss | Berlin film festival 2024

Olivier Assayas’s new film is a flimsy but elegant autofictional sketch about his own experiences during the Covid lockdown, bubbling up with family members in his childhood home in la France profonde. It’s a movie which reminds us that for all the anxieties, this period of enforced inactivity was for grownups of a certain age and financial security not entirely unpleasant – a reminder of the endless, aimless summer days of childhood, an Edenic existence outside time which workaholic media professionals thought never to…
