Aurora, Colorado brewery will close, sell to new owners

Scott Procop is getting out of the brewery business. But he’s not going far away. The owner of Ursula Brewery, which opened in 2014 next to the Anschutz Medical Campus, Procop decided earlier this year that it was time to sell the brewery in order to focus on his family restaurant at 2100 Ursula St., Cedar Creek Pub, which is across the street from the brewery. Why does billionaire Robert F. Smith’s family own a Denver brewery?

Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spangalang Brewery was struggling. A tiny beer maker located in the former DMV office in Five Points Plaza, Spangalang had opened in 2015 and become a favorite for locals, but not the kind of regional draw that drives huge growth. So when brewery owners Darren Boyd and Taylor Rees got a major investment offer from their landlord, the Flyfisher Group, they planned to accept. Flyfisher, which owns or operates several properties and businesses in the neighborhood, would take a 40% share,…

Longmont’s Pumphouse Brewery moves to employee ownership model

Since starting at downtown Longmont’s Pumphouse Brewery almost 25 years ago, Alejandro Fraire has been a dishwasher, cook and sous chef. Now, with the company’s transition into a model of employee ownership, he’s also a shareholder. “Before, we never got anything from the restaurant except a paycheck,” Fraire said. “So it’s a little better. It’s something that we never had.” The Pumphouse Brewery in Longmont is now an employee-owned business. (Cliff Grassmick/Staff Photographer) The brewery at 540 Main St., which first…

Gluten-free Golden brewery Holidaily looks to raise $4M to expand

Holidaily is brewing up capital. The gluten-free brewery in Golden has raised $1 million of its $4 million goal. “We’ve grown over 1,500 percent since we started, and we want to continue growing,” founder Karen Hertz said. The Colorado native started Holidaily Brewing Co. in 2016 after doctors told her she needed to cut out gluten for post-cancer treatment. But Hertz, a Coors employee, loved beer. “I saw the need for it and I just felt sad for people who can’t have beer with friends and family,” Hertz said. “They always…

Grandma’s House brewery pulls out of Trinidad lease with Sexy Pizza

Grandma’s moved out of Trinidad.  The brewery, that is.  In 2021, two Denver-based businesses – Sexy Pizza and Grandma’s House brewery – decided to expand down to the city just north of the Colorado-New Mexico border.  “It was sort of an impulsive decision to open the bar down there,” Grandma’s House founder Matthew Fuerst said. “Sort of a combination of mid-COVID stir craziness and Denver kind of changing quickly.”  Sexy Pizza co-owner Kayvan Khalatbari bought the historic train depot building at 516 E. Elm St. that…

Counter Culture Brewery in Denver appears to have closed for good

When they opened their doors in September 2019, the owners of Counter Culture Brewery & Grille hoped to bring something different to Denver’s craft scene — a casual restaurant that was equally as focused on good food as it was on classic and easy-drinking beer styles. But then came the pandemic, followed by the exit of brewery co-founder Kevin McCrossin and of head chef James Bland. Then in March, Counter Culture, at 205 E. 7th Ave., closed for a month’s worth of maintenance, according to a sign on the door. Two…

Dos Luces Brewery in Denver to close summer 2023

A Denver brewery is planning to close later this summer after what the owner calls a “tough five years” brewing and serving beer in the Mile High City. Judd Belstock, owner and founder of Dos Luces Brewery, announced the closure via social media Monday, and while he doesn’t have a firm closing date, he plans to celebrate the business’ fifth anniversary on July 29 before closing up shop. Belstock’s decision comes several months after a car crashed into Dos Luces’ storefront at 1236 S. Broadway in Denver. “The car crashing…

This brewery next to Casa Bonita will be the best people-watching spot

With thousands of people anticipating Casa Bonita’s grand reopening, fans seeking to experience the revitalized Lakewood restaurant should expect a wait. Lucky for locals, there’s a brewery in the same shopping complex that’s already preparing to accommodate the masses. WestFax Brewing Co., at 6733 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood, has been Casa Bonita’s neighbor since opening in the Lamar Station Plaza in 2016. Jackie Martuscello, the brewery’s marketing and sales manager, said she knows the date the eatertainment venue plans…

MobCraft brewery closes just seven months after opening in Curtis Park

MobCraft, a Wisconsin brewery that opened a Denver outlet in September 2022 at 2403 Champa St., announced Thursday that it will close for good at 7 p.m. on April 23. “The closure is due to circumstances beyond our control with our Denver lease and myriad unfortunate events,” according to a statement from MobCraft Beer CEO Henry Schwartz. The brewery and its former restaurant partner Dee Tacko took over the former Liberati Brewing space in October 2021 before spending 11 months renovating the building (Dee Tacko moved out…

Sandlot Brewery first female brewer created Rockies’ anniversary IPA

Abby Lundien estimates she attended at least 25 Colorado Rockies games over the years growing up in Brighton, but she had never visited the Sandlot Brewery, located inside Coors Field, until she started working for Molson Coors. Now she’s there practically every day. Lundien, 31, joined the Sandlot team as a brewer in September and notably, she’s the first woman on staff in the famed beer maker’s 28-year history. As a Colorado native, Lundien is well aware of the legacy she’s stepping into. Blue Moon Belgian-style white…
