Ana’s Norwegian Bakeri closes 16th Street Mall, Centennial shops

Ana Fanakra sat in her bakery on the 16th Street Mall on what turned out to be its last day in business, Feb. 3, waiting for customers. But not many came, and she decided to close up early. “We had really low sales that day,” she said. “We hadn’t even made $100 yet, which was a very accurate picture of what the last couple of months looked like for us.” The next day, she decided to call it quits, closing both the original location of Ana’s Norwegian Bakeri, which opened in Centennial in June 2021, and the downtown bakery,…

Centennial says no to any new outdoor pickleball courts until October

Centennial this week approved a six-month moratorium on the construction of new outdoor pickleball courts in the city so that it can assess the potential for noise complaints, and how to minimize them, as the popular sport continues to boom in Colorado. The City Council voted 8-1 on Tuesday night in favor of the temporary ban, which will end on Sept. 30 unless extended by the council. There have been multiple reports from around the country about neighborhoods driven crazy by the sound of the impact between pickleball and…

Aaron McBride’s dunk lifts Corona Centennial to Open Division title

With no proper way to summarize what just happened, no possible explanation that could convey the emotions of one of the most ridiculous endings in California high school basketball history, Corona Centennial senior Jared McCain kept it simple.“I love you,” McCain exclaimed to senior teammate Aaron McBride, in a haze of celebration. “So much.”One mistake from seeing his team’s dreams of three-peating for the Open Division crown extinguished, Corona Centennial’s Aaron McBride was in the right place at the right time. St.…

Noise around Centennial Airport has neighbors begging the FAA for relief

The incessant buzz of flight school prop planes circling overhead makes Audra Dubler’s Greenwood Village neighborhood sound like a “war zone.” “If it’s not windy or snowing, they are out,” Dubler said. “It sounds like planes are crashing every 38 seconds.” A raft of recent complaints about aircraft noise north of Centennial Airport — the second busiest general aviation airport in the country with 350 landings and takeoffs of prop planes per day — has pitted airport officials against the Federal Aviation Administration,…

Lettuce from a two-acre rooftop in Centennial could be coming to your plate soon

In Centennial, there are plans afoot to launch what would be Colorado’s largest rooftop greenhouse — a two-acre operation on top of a yet-to-be-built sports complex that will grow and package nearly two tons of leafy greens a day from a perch three stories above Interstate 25. It’s a novel enough concept that elected leaders in the south suburb first need to change their zoning to allow an agricultural use currently not permitted in the 36-acre mixed-use project known as The District, which is beginning to sprout just…
