Chameleon AI program classifies objects in satellite images faster

Overview of METEOR in as a deep learning model pre-trained on land cover source tasks and deployed on diverse downstream tasks. The task data describes a new problem in a format that a machine learning model can be optimized on. In METEOR, shown in (b), a randomly initialized meta-model is pre-trained with model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) to solve land cover classification source tasks, shown in (a). MAML yields a deep meta-model that has explicitly…

Museum classifies Roman emperor as trans—but modern labels oversimplify ancient gender identities

Elagabalus ruled as Roman emperor for just four years before being murdered in AD 222. He was still a teenager when he died. Despite his short reign, Elagabalus is counted among the most infamous of Roman emperors, often listed alongside Caligula and Nero. His indiscretions, recorded by the Roman chroniclers, include: marrying a vestal virgin, the most chaste of Roman priestesses, twice; dressing up as a female

LCE, Random Forest, XGBoost: Which One Classifies Better? | by Kevin Fauvel, PhD, CFA, CAIA | Oct, 2022

A comparison of the state-of-the-art tree-based ensemble classifiersPhoto by Aaron Burden on Unplash. As studied in “Why Do Tree-Based Models still Outperform Deep Learning on Tabular Data?” , tree-based models remain the state-of-the-art on medium-sized data (~10K samples). Recently, Local Cascade Ensemble (LCE) proposes to combine the strengths of the top performing tree-based ensemble methods — Random Forest and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) , and integrates a supplementary diversification approach to obtain a…

US FCC Classifies Huawei and ZTE as Security Threats, Cuts off Funding

US FCC has classified Huawei and ZTE as security threats, and banned them as suppliers for projects under its Universal Service Fund, because of alleged ties to Chinese military and intelligence services. The Federal Communications Commission is the US agency that regulates all communications technology. In a news release explaining the decision, the FCC said that this is a step to protect US networks fro security risks. The two companies have been banned as suppliers under the FCC's Universal Service Fund. The fund is a…
