Alpine Dog Brewing closing in Denver in March

It has been tough for breweries in central Denver over the past year as at least half a dozen have closed, including Mockery, MobCraft, Wah Gwaan, Dos Luces, Counter Culture and Lowdown. Alpine Dog Brewing, at 1308 E. 17th Ave., will join that list when it shuts its doors on March 31. “After nearly 10 years of great beer, great friends and the most fun and epic of times, Alpine Dog will be selling or otherwise closing the brewery,” the business wrote on social media. “It’s a bittersweet moment to leave behind what we…

Lady Justice Brewing moving from Aurora

Lady Justice Brewing, which has been a fixture of the Front Range beer scene since 2016, will close its Aurora taproom at the end of the month in anticipation of moving. According to an announcement on social media, the brewery has outgrown its current home at 9735 E. Colfax Ave. and plans to relocate to “a much larger space.” A representative from the brewery was not immediately available to discuss where Lady Justice will set up shop next or how soon. It’s unclear if Lady J beers will be available anywhere in the…

The Fifth String restaurant leases along Colfax after owner’s health scare

Last year wasn’t easy on Amos Watts. But, with a new location secured for his restaurant, he thinks 2024 is already looking better. The Fifth String — which Watts originally opened in LoHi in 2020 — will reopen in 3,200 square feet at 1490 Eudora St., along East Colfax in the Hale neighborhood. Watts said he closed the LoHi location in August because the space wasn’t right for the restaurant. But there was another complicating factor: doctors found benign tumors on his jaw. Watts said he knew The Fifth String wouldn’t…

Denver City Council approves $89 million deal for former Post building

Denver city government took a big step Tuesday toward turning the former downtown headquarters of The Denver Post into a courthouse when the City Council approved an $88.5 million purchase agreement for the building at 101 W. Colfax Ave. A city master plan projects it will need an additional 280,000 square feet of space for the city and county’s courts system by 2040. The former Denver Post building — which rises 11 stories and has roughly 306,000 square feet — has been identified as an ideal fit for that need by city…

7-Eleven closing Denver store at East Colfax and Josephine

A 7-Eleven convenience store that has operated for more than a decade near East High School is closing. Merchandise at the 2341 E. Its building was erected specifically for 7-Eleven. The property is owned by Denver-based Kentro Group. Kentro executive Jimmy Balafas said 7-Eleven corporate, which owns the store, sent him a…

“Newgrass” bar taking over for Sancho’s Broken Arrow on Colfax

As the founder of a local billiards league, Patrick McNally has spent innumerable hours in bars shooting pool and drinking beer. So much so, that he noticed a niche of consumers that could use a space dedicated to their interests – namely, fans of newgrass music. “We go out to these places and these jukeboxes just don’t have our music on there. You know, we like to listen to Billy Strings, we like to listen to Kitchen Dwellers, Fruition, Old Crow Medicine Show, and even some of the local bands like Tenth Mountain…

Ice Cream Riot closing after 10 years in Denver

After a decade of selling ice cream with wacky toppings and in all kinds of shapes and sizes, Denver’s Ice Cream Riot, 1238 E. Colfax Ave., has announced that it is closing soon. The store was known for its breakfast cereal-inspired ice creams, like Fruity Pebbles, along with Pop-Tarts ice cream sandwiches and of course, cannoli-stuffed ice creams. “Well friends, I’m here to break the news that like Boyz II Men, we’ve come to the end of the road here at Ice Cream Riot,” owner Jim McNutt posted on Instagram. “A few weeks…

Denver Council to vote on design rules for East Colfax ahead of BRT project

Denver city leaders on Monday will vote on new rules that could dictate how East Colfax Avenue looks and functions for decades. But whether those rules, already in place on other busy streets, are a poor fit for the thoroughfare remains a point of debate. If approved by the City Council, the package of proposed zoning changes will govern future development for hundreds of properties between Sherman and Yosemite streets with an eye toward ensuring ample shopfronts and more space for sidewalk users along Colfax. The measure…

Denver keeps city workers downtown while renovating Webb building

The Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building is the workhorse of Denver’s real estate portfolio, providing space for 2,100 employees across departments from the Clerk and Recorder’s Office to city planning to parks and recreation. Now, more than 20 years after it was built at 201 W. Colfax Ave., work is underway on a $133.5 million overhaul. The renovation will touch all 12 floors of the gray, oval-shaped office tower north of Civic Center park over the next two years. And even while it’s under construction, the Webb…

Tom’s Starlight, a midcentury-style cocktail lounge that inhabits a former diner on Colfax Avenue, has closed barely a year after opening. Co-owner Tom Messina confirmed the closure via text Monday, stating that the space, which is a historic landmark, is still available for lease. Tom’s Starlight was listed for lease earlier this month. “We hope someone will come in and do right by the space. GBX, my partners and me are very proud of what we’ve done in preserving the building,” Messina said by text. “After 45 years in…
