A Record-Sized Deep Sea Coral Reef Was Mapped in The Atlantic, And It’s Breathtaking : ScienceAlert

Dense thickets of ghostly corals shelter myriads of unfamiliar sea creatures have been found covering a vast area of the deep Atlantic, breaking records to become the largest known deep sea reef."It's eye-opening – it's breathtaking in scale," says Scripps Institution of Oceanography marine biologist Stuart Sandin. We barely have a clue what these hard-to-reach ecosystems hold, with more than 75 percent of the globe's ocean floor yet to be charted in detail. But new technology has just allowed researchers to map one…

Bill Ryder-Jones: Iechyd Da review – Coral co-founder’s songs of heartache and hope | Music

Since Bill Ryder-Jones left the Coral in 2008 after five Top 10 albums, he’s been quietly busying himself away in his Yawn studio in West Kirby on the Wirral Peninsula. He’s produced records for the likes of Saint Saviour, Brooke Bentham and Michael Head (his 2022 masterpiece, Dear Scott) while his succession of Yawn-created solo albums has mapped out a singular musical vision. This has stretched from orchestral imaginary soundtracks (2011 debut If…); fragile, damaged folk-rock (2013’s A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart);…

The race is on to save coral reefs–by freezing them

Hagedorn and her collaborators have been able to cryopreserve larvae since 2018, but the process was finicky, and thawing them required sophisticated lasers to heat them at a rate of more than 1,000,000 °C per minute. Now, Hagedorn’s team has devised and tested a simplified method. The larvae are dehydrated on a steel mesh, immersed in a cryoprotectant, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. To thaw them, the mesh is put in a room-temperature rehydration solution. If all goes well, the larvae swim off within two hours. “That’s…

Climate change is killing coral — can AI help protect the reefs?

Time is running out to save the world’s coral reefs, so conservationists are turning to every tool they can to protect vanishing reefs — including AI. In Florida, the race is on to restore reefs by “planting” corals raised by humans. It’s an upward battle as rising ocean temperatures stress already struggling reefs. Tracking the progress is essential but tedious work. In the past, coral conservationists would have had to physically swim out to reefs to take notes on individual corals they’d planted using a pencil and…

How I learned to stop min-maxing and embrace serenity in Coral Island

I’m an efficiency monster. Min-maxing, goal-setting, and achievements — they’re all part of my milestone-driven playstyle in most games. My quest for powerful builds or ideal stats often adds a layer of challenge that games don’t demand, but I rarely deviate from the strategy. Coral Island makes optimization impossible though, and I think I love it. Starting out The only things I really knew about Coral Island were that it involved farming and had extensive romance options. I went in with a few specific goals: romance a…

How humans are engineering the future of coral reefs

How do you bring back a vanishing coral reef? That’s what conservationists are racing to do in the Florida Keys, where they’re coming up with a whole new playbook for saving corals. Over the summer, they did what used to be the unthinkable: they took thousands of corals out of the sea to save them from a killer ocean heatwave. Hot tub-like temperatures might have wiped them out otherwise. Now, what’s next? The Verge visited the evacuated corals where they found temporary refuge on land. We spent time at a gene bank, home…

Deep-sea coral evidence found for enhanced subglacial discharge from Antarctica during meltwater pulse 1A

Fig. 1 Locations of deep-sea coral samples. Credit: NIGPAS Subglacial discharge from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) likely played a crucial role in the loss of ice sheet and the subsequent rise in sea level during the last deglaciation. However, no direct proxy is currently available to document subglacial discharge from the AIS, which leaves significant gaps in our understanding of the complex interactions between subglacial…

Coral Island and its many, many romances launches into 1.0 – Destructoid

Stairway Games and Humble Games have launched their crowdfunded life/farm sim, Coral Island, out of Early Access and into full release. It’s currently available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch version coming later. Looking at Coral Island, I mostly just see a tropical Stardew Valley. Not that that’s entirely a bad thing. Stardew Valley itself was essentially just a Harvest Moon done better. What matters here is that there are 25 damned singles in this game to romance. Now, if you’re like me, you have one…
