The oceans hold enormous carbon dioxide sequestration potential, making them an ally in the climate change fight

Scanning electron microscopy image showing a precipitated hydrated calcium carbonate mineral (Ikaite), which could be used for ocean alkalinity enhancement for carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere. Credit: Dr Laura Bastianini (Heriot-Watt University) Enhancing the ocean's ability to remove CO2 particles from the atmosphere will be crucial in the fight against climate change, according to a new research paper.…

Corruption fuels carbon dioxide emissions in Asia: Study

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain Widespread corruption is preventing Asian countries from effectively implementing measures to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that are known to contribute to global warming, new research suggests. According to the Center for Global Development, a think tank based in London and Washington,

Carbon dioxide is shrinking uppermost atmosphere, prolonging life of space debris

Daily global average (55°N to 55°S) temperature (K) at five different pressure levels from January 2002 through December 2021. More than 7,200 days of data are plotted for each pressure level. Credit: Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres (2022). DOI: 10.1029/2022JD036767 Near Earth's surface, increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are causing temperatures to rise. But starting around 60 kilometers…

Simple Material Could Scrub Carbon Dioxide From Power Plant Smokestacks

Exhaust from coal-fired power plants, at left, contain large quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (purple tripartite molecules). Aluminum formate, a metal-organic framework whose structure is highlighted at right, can selectively capture carbon dioxide from dried flue gas conditions, potentially at a fraction of the cost of using other carbon filtration materials. Credit: B. Hayes / NISTEasily synthesized chemical filter could stop the greenhouse gas from reaching the atmosphere. How can carbon dioxide, a…

How Chemistry Makes Carbon Dioxide Removal Possible [Video]

Power plants that generate electricity through the combustion of fossil fuels are a significant contributing factor to the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide.Over the last couple of hundred years, the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has skyrocketed. Scientists predict that if we don’t remove at least some of it, there will be even more heat waves, wildfires, hurricanes, and other climate disasters. In this episode of the American Chemical Society’s video series Reactions, they break down how people are…

Why scientists want to help plants capture more carbon dioxide

This week in The Spark, we’re taking a look back at one of my favorite sessions from our ClimateTech conference last week, from a chapter we called “Cleaning Your Plate.”  In the session, I sat down with Pamela Ronald, a plant geneticist at the University of California, Davis. She’s been working for years on helping rice survive floods, and now she’s turning her attention to using advanced genetics for carbon removal on farmland.  Genetics and plants Scientists have a wide range of tools at their disposal to…

Tracing anthropogenically emitted carbon dioxide into the ocean

The net atmosphere-to-ocean carbon flow rates for total carbon (and hence for ΔC), anthropogenically emitted carbon CA, and for natural carbon (and hence for ΔCN). Solid lines are for the case of variable air-sea exchange, while dashed lines are for constant air-sea exchange coefficients (constant solubility and piston velocities). The light shading around lines visible for recent years indicates the half-range spread across the three versions of the…

A just price for carbon dioxide

Hetereogeneity of households. Panel A: mean expenditure shares in 10 × 10 grid based on EVS 2018 data. Panel B: mean expenditure shares from estimated model. DOI: 10.1016/j.jeem.2022.102730 "It is crucial that the revenues from CO2 pricing are returned, and in a targeted manner: Distributing them back in shotgun-mode is only the second-best solution," explains…

Delayed slow ocean response to carbon dioxide removal causes asymmetric tropical rainfall change

Evolution of global mean and patterns of change in surface temperature and rainfall during the CO2 ramp-up and ramp-down periods. (a) The 21-year running mean of atmospheric CO2 concentration (green) and the annual-mean changes in global mean surface temperature (red) and rainfall (blue) in the CO2 ramp-up/ramp-down experiment. The dashed vertical line indicates year 140, when the CO2 concentration peaks. The two gray bands covering years 62–81 and…

Researchers capture first images of carbon dioxide emissions from commercial aircraft engine

Researchers developed a technique called chemical species tomography that can capture carbon dioxide exhaust from a commercial airplane engine. To image such a large area, the researchers used a 7-m-diameter optical mounting frame (red) located just 3 m from the exit nozzle of the engine. The testing facility is at the Instituto Nacional de Tecnica Aeroespacial (INTA) in Madrid. Credit: Gordon Humphries, University of Strathclyde…
