Electricity subsidy hits N1.6 trillion as NERC unveils new tariff order

The Nigerian government will pay as much as N1.6 trillion to subsidise electricity in the year 2024. The Chairperson of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC), Sanusi Garba, disclosed this while speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. NERC also unveiled a new electricity tariff plan payable by electricity consumers in the country. The Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) shows that the order takes effect from 1 January and shall cease to be effective on the issuance of a new tariff review…

U.S.’s Biggest Renewable Project Is Under Way, Finally

Jan. 13, 2024 10:00 am ETA wind and power transmission project, called the largest of its kind in the country, has raised $11 billion in financing, kicking off a year when many utilities are expected to step up much-needed spending on the power grid.Pattern Energy Grouphas started construction on its SunZia project, a wind farm in central New Mexico, where more than 900 wind turbines will generate over 3,000 megawatts of clean energy. A 550-mile transmission line will bring the power to some three million people in

What if You Never Had to Charge Your Gadgets Again?

After decades of trying, consumer electronics companies are rolling out a solar technology that mimics photosynthesis in plants. It lets devices charge indoors and, in some cases, can eliminate batteries entirely. This new light-harvesting tech is fundamentally different from the crystalline silicon-based panels on rooftops and in solar farms, and also from the amorphous silicon cells on the kind of solar-powered calculators that were once ubiquitous. This new tech is based on principles first explored by chemists in the…

China’s Solar Dominance Faces New Rival: An Ultrathin Film

Jan. 10, 2024 11:00 pm ETTOKYO—China’s near-monopoly on the solar-energy market has prompted the U.S. and allies to step up the search for workarounds. Engineers believe they have found one in a type of solar cell that looks and feels like camera film.Japan is pushing the technology with subsidies and other support, a sign of how renewable energy, alongside other high-tech fields such as semiconductors, has become a geopolitical football.Copyright ©2024Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Zapping Baby Plant Roots With Electricity Boosts Growth by 50% : ScienceAlert

Just like human nerve cells, plants are alive with electrical signals. Although we can't usually see or feel them, these pulses of electrical activity surge through plant tissues, triggering sudden movements or warning of newly inflicted wounds. Now researchers have tapped into that circuitry to boost plant growth, finding that zapping barley seedlings with electricity helps new shoots grow faster. What seems like a bit of ticklish fun could actually be a real boon to food supplies at a time when food security is of…

Group tells Xcel Energy-Colorado that nuclear should replace coal plant

A committee of Pueblo community members has recommended that Xcel Energy-Colorado replace a coal plant, beset by longstanding mechanical and operational problems, with modular nuclear units or a gas plant that would capture the carbon dioxide emissions. However, a report released Friday by the Pueblo Innovative Energy Solutions Advisory Committee made clear that the group’s top choice is what it calls advanced nuclear technology. A nuclear facility will create more jobs and tax revenue for local governments, the report…

How electricity could help tackle a surprising climate villain

Cement hides in plain sight—it’s used to build everything from roads and buildings to dams and basement floors. But there’s a climate threat lurking in those ubiquitous gray slabs. Cement production accounts for more than 7% of global carbon dioxide emissions—more than sectors like aviation, shipping, or landfills. Humans have been making cement, in one form or another, for thousands of years. Ancient Romans used volcanic ash, crushed lime, and seawater to build the aqueducts and iconic structures like the Pantheon.…

Xcel Energy-Colorado’s location of new substation raises questions

With more renewable energy going on the grid and more vehicles and homes turning all-electric, Colorado utilities and regulators are planning more transmission lines and equipment to handle the increasing demands. But questions about the location of new electric substations, which convert high-voltage electricity to power for homes and businesses, have come up after Xcel Energy-Colorado revealed plans for a substation in Denver’s Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. The area is already home to several industrial sites, some of…

Could EVs have wireless charging? Here’s what you need to know

Tesla / Tesla You may be familiar with the concept of wireless charging for your phone — but what if you could wirelessly charge your electric car? Well, it seems like that concept may not be all that far-fetched. In fact, Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen announced in a video with Jay Leno about the Cybertruck that Tesla is working on an inductive charger for the home. Now, of course, this is Tesla we’re talking about. The company noting that it’s “working” on something like this could mean that it’s coming…
