CATL shares energy-dense battery that will power electric planes

The world’s largest battery maker continues to showcase why it’s the name to beat in its given segment. During the Shanghai Auto Show, CATL launched a new condensed battery that delivers the proper safety and energy density to enable the flight of electric passenger planes. If this technology sounds like it’s still several years away, think again – CATL expects to begin mass production sooner than you’d think. CATL remains the name to beat in EV battery development, not only in China, where it…

This light, energy-dense battery just got independently verified

Amprius Technologies (NYSE: AMPX) today announced that its high-energy, high-power lithium-ion battery with a silicon anode platform has been verified by an independent test lab. The 500 Wh/kg, 1300 Wh/L battery’s performance was verified by Beaverton, Oregon-based Mobile Power Solutions, which checks compliance, safety, and performance. Its cell model reportedly provides >504 Wh/kg and >1321 Wh/l at 25C. Or, to put it another way, as Jon Bornstein, president of Amprius Lab explained,…

New energy-dense lithium-sulfur battery works at extreme temperatures

As part of their research into next-generation battery technology, scientists at University of California, San Diego are exploring designs that can function at extreme temperatures, and they're beginning to make some significant inroads. In their latest study, the team demonstrates a lithium battery that can not only operate at freezing cold and scorching hot temperatures, but may store double the energy of current devices and be friendlier to the environment while it's at it.Last year, we looked at an interesting…
