Review: Faithful Fighters by Kate Imy

There is an old adage that enjoins readers not to judge a book by its cover and yet I must confess to a twinge of annoyance when I saw the depiction of Indian soldiers of the Great War portrayed on the cover of Kate Imy’s Faithful Fighters. I presumed (wrongly) that the book dealt primarily with the history of what is today labelled as the “British Indian Army”. The cover depicts a group of British Sikh re-enactors dressed in WW 1 uniforms photographed in front of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton during the centenary…

Foo Fighters, Fred Again and fabulous sunshine: Friday at Glastonbury – photo essay | Glastonbury 2023

Friday was a beautifully sunny day to start the festival’s big stages. Prior to the day’s biggest acts – the not-so mystery act the ChurnUps, dance star Fred Again, and a Fomo-inducing final clash between Arctic Monkeys, Wizkid, Kelis, Hot Chip, Fever Ray and a Chemical Brothers DJ set – the day kicked off for many with a certain lustrously-curled motivator.Joe Wicks kicked things off early with an on stage fitness session, with the Theatre and Circus area providing a health kick for young and old festivalgoers…

Foo Fighters secret Glastonbury set review – a band who have learned to fly again | Foo Fighters

It’s one of the cruel rules of love and attraction that the more you try to impress someone, the less you’ll succeed; no-one likes a try-hard. And so it proves with rock’n’roll: heavily produced, overthought and desperate to please bands just don’t resonate like the ones who are doing it to please themselves. After a few albums on which Foo Fighters have felt like they were trying too hard to do the thing they once did so naturally – rock out – this secret set at Glastonbury, loosened of expectation, sees them finally…

Mortal Kombat 1 Shows Off Kameo Fighters in Bone-Krunching Gameplay Trailer

Mortal Kombat 1 got an extended gameplay trailer at the Summer Game Fest, held early Friday, and it looks absurdly violent in all the right ways. The game serves as a reboot — the beginning of a new timeline in the universe, forged by the Fire God Liu Kang, following his ascension into godhood at the end of Mortal Kombat 11. While recognisable characters return, they all bear new looks and origin stories, with Scorpion and Sub-Zero now being reborn as brothers. The MK franchise creator Ed Boon also dropped by on-stage to…
