House punts on AI with directionless new task force

The House of Representatives has founded a Task Force on artificial intelligence that will “ensure America continues leading in this strategic area,” as Speaker Mike Johnson put it. But the announcement feels more like a punt after years of indecision that show no sign of ending. In a way this task force — chaired by California Reps Ted Lieu and Jay Obernolte — is a welcome sign of Congress doing something, anything, on an important topic that has become the darling of tech investment. But in another, more important…

EU won’t force Apple to open up iMessage to other messaging platforms

In September 2023, the European Commission opened an investigation to determine if Apple’s iMessage qualifies as a Core Platform Service. Today, the agency has concluded that the messaging platform doesn’t qualify as one. It means that Apple will not have to open iMessage to other messaging platforms, such as Messenger and WhatsApp. This is a huge win for the Cupertino-based tech giant and it allows the company to continue keeping users locked into its ecosystem of products and services. Along with it, the European…

Cali startup delivers first electric cargo plane for US Air Force

Pyka, a Silicon Valley startup, delivered its first electric autonomous cargo plane to AFWERX, the US Air Force’s network of innovators. Founded in 2017 in CEO Michael Norcia’s parent’s garage in Silicon Valley, the startup is now handing over electric planes for US Air Force use. Pyka initially focused on crop spraying with fewer regulations and hurdles. Its first model, the Egret, was certified in New Zealand in May 2019, making it the first human-scale electric aircraft for commercial use.…

However, the Asian version is still set to launch on March 14 for PS4 and PS5. The western launch will also include a PC port.…

Earth Defense Force 6 delays bug smashing until Summer 2024

D3Publisher and Sandlot have announced that bug-basher Earth Defense Force 6 is being pushed back from its intended release window of Spring 2024 and into Summer 2024. D3 suggests that the delay is so Sandlot can “add finishing touches and finalize preparations for its Western launch.” That’s basically all I got in terms of new information. I deliver nothing but disappointment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwtaYENREEY The Earth Defense Force series started back on the PS2 with Simple 2000 Series Vol. 31: The…

Scientists Erle Ellis has synthesized interdisciplinary research to illustrate how human cultural practices have historically enabled the transformation of ecosystems, advancing from the use of fire to the development of global supply chains. Highlighting the Anthropocene’s environmental challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, Ellis argues for leveraging human society’s social and cultural capabilities towards sustainable coexistence with nature, emphasizing cooperation and the reimagining of our…

Force of Nature: The Dry 2 review – Eric Bana returns as Aaron Falk in solid thriller | Australian film

The first and perhaps most obvious point to make about Robert Connolly’s sequel to his popular and finely made mystery-thriller The Dry is that it’s not dry at all – it’s very, very wet. The director, again adapting a bestselling novel by Jane Harper, opens with shots of lush wilderness – the film is largely based in the Victorian mountain ranges – and rain-covered leaves. The first time we see Eric Bana, back again as federal police agent Aaron Falk, he’s doing laps in a swimming pool. His fellow agent, Carmen Cooper…

“Works For The Space Force”: People Share What Their Wealthy Friends Do For A Living (45 Answers)

Pig farmer. I kid you not. He's my father's old friend. I visited him once when my father and I were passing through the state. He lives in a modest classic farmhouse with his wife, both in their seventies. I mentioned I was starting a school in West Africa as we were catching up. A few weeks later I got a text asking how much it would cost. I told him 40k, thinking it was really nice of him if he wanted to send a few dollars. I got a check for 40k. I thought it would take me years to raise that. I'm typing this from…
