Liam Gallagher John Squire review – fans left short-changed by duo devoid of chemistry | Liam Gallagher

The opening night of the Liam Gallagher John Squire tour is full of fans who’d listen to the two rock’n’roll heroes play the phonebook. Unfortunately the Oasis singer and Stone Roses guitarist put that loyalty to the test – and not only because Gallagher lists colours on psychedelic, stomping opener Just Another Rainbow.Currently UK No 1, their self-titled album blends Gallagher’s brusque swagger with Squire’s fluid songwriting, then filters it through 60s rock and Britpop nostalgia. Clearly both musicians thrive in a…

Nostalgia can feel like an affliction plaguing music – until suddenly, a big backward-facing record comes along that makes that ailment seem not so bad after all. Of all the unexpected products of the current 90s revival, this album-length collaboration between former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire and erstwhile Oasis singer Liam Gallagher (the title simply their full names; henceforth I’ll call it Gallagher Squire) seems so textbook, so route one, as to be almost absurd. Here is Gallagher, coming off a notable period…

A few weeks ago, Liam Gallagher took to social media to talk up his collaborative album with John Squire. Proclaiming it to be both “spiritual” and “crucial”, he also shared his thoughts on its potential audience. “The people that are into the Stone Roses and Oasis and that kinda thing, I think they’ll fucking love it.”You can mock that statement if you want – did anyone think the prosaically titled Liam Gallagher John Squire would sound like 100 Gecs? – but there’s still an impressively targeted sales pitch at its…

‘No kinky saucepot shenanigans!’: Liam Gallagher and John Squire on their psychedelic resurrection | Liam Gallagher

When Liam Gallagher first heard the songs John Squire had written for their new collaborative album, he had two thoughts: that they were “banging”, and that he instinctively knew how to sing them. After all, he’s been singing Squire’s songs since his early teens.“You’ve got to remember, I’m a massive Stone Roses fan,” Gallagher announces from across the table at a studio in Kentish Town, north London. “They were the ones who got me into a band, so I know the rhythms. It’s not like I’m singing Trent Reznor out of the…

Liam Gallagher and John Squire: Just Another Rainbow review – predictable? Definitely. Good? Maybe | Liam Gallagher

Liam Gallagher and John Squire have a history that dates back to 1988, when a 16-year-old Gallagher saw the Stone Roses play Manchester’s International 2 Club in the company of his older brother Noel, an experience the former described as “life-changing”, and ultimately inspired him to join a local band, the Rain, who ultimately became Oasis. Six years later, the members of the Stone Roses broke off from the troubled recording sessions for their second album to gather around the studio’s TV and watch Oasis’s debut…
