Helldivers 2 has a ‘Game Master’ modifying the galactic war in real-time

Despite mostly going under the radar before it came out, Helldivers 2 proved that it’s got what it takes to reach the top charts. With a concurrent player cap of 700,000 players, Helldivers 2 has now revealed that it’s got a veritable “Game Master” coordinating its war efforts. What’s driving the flood of layoffs in the video game industry?

Over the course of the first two months of the year, video game companies have already announced plans to lay off more than 8,000 workers. It’s a big shift from the explosive growth the industry saw during and immediately following the pandemic—and, for many, a puzzling one.Electronic Arts was the latest to trim its payroll, announcing plans late Wednesday to reduce its workforce by 5%, or roughly 670 people. How to modernize your retro game collection in a few convoluted steps

I have a large collection of physical video games. Each passing year, this somewhat prosaic characteristic becomes more and more notable, both in terms of uniqueness and — considering the age of much of my collection, coupled with the unyielding passage of time — complexity. With the trajectory of video game distribution hurtling toward a digital-only future, my insistence on preserving some of its history keeps me connected to the objects and, more importantly, the experiences they contain in a way that a digital library…

Nintendo steps up its fight against Switch emulators and game piracy

Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the creators of a popular Switch emulator called Yuzu, which gives users a way to play games developed for the platform on their PCs and Android devices. In the lawsuit, the company argues Yuzu violates the anti-circumvention and anti-trafficking provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).While Nintendo taking down online offenders isn’t new, this case could set a precedent for future lawsuits against emulators, which aren’t themselves illegal. Nintendo is arguing their…

Horror franchise Paranormal Activity has a video game on the way, it has been announced. Other than that, it’s unclear exactly what form the game will take, though a reveal teaser simply titled “Paranormal Activity: Found Footage” seems to indicate that the game will take a found…
