When Giving Up Is Productive. Identifying the signals of a failing… | by Tim Lee | Jun, 2022

Identifying the signals of a failing data science projectPhoto by Brett Jordan on UnsplashAttack every problem with tenacity, but don’t be ignorant to apparent failure.Data science is wrought with left turns and dead ends. It’s a byproduct of the curiosity we have to follow in order to answer questions about poorly understood problems. I find it’s in the nature of most data scientists to get excited when they encounter a problem they don’t know the answer to. Often finding that answer leads to something extraordinary or…

We’re giving kids “climate anxiety” and it’s not necessary

My 5-year-old daughter is now old enough to read a lot of books and magazines aimed at children, and it’s given me a whole new perspective on the discourse wars over how we talk about climate change, conservation, and the future of the planet. As I’ve written about before, climate change is going to be bad, and it will hold back humanity from thriving as much as we should this century. It will likely cause mass migration and displacement and extinctions of many species. What it won’t do, however, is make the Earth…
