EPA Aims to Label Two ‘Forever Chemicals’ as Hazardous

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed designating two chemicals used for more than half a century in everything from carpets to cookware as hazardous substances, the latest effort to clean up compounds linked to cancer and other health problems. The two man-made substances, commonly known as PFOA and PFOS, were used in consumer products under brand names such as Teflon and Scotchgard beginning in the 1950s because of their nonstick and water-repellent qualities. They are part of a…

NASA’s First Set of Small Satellites for SunRISE Mission Ready to Detect, Track Hazardous Space Weather Events

NASA's SunRISE — or Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment — is an ambitious program that plans to launch the largest radio telescope ever to detect and track hazardous explosive space weather events. The production of the first six satellites has been completed at the Utah State University Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), according to the US space agency. The SDL has been contracted to build, test, and commission all six satellites for the mission. Anticipated for a launch in 2024, NASA's SunRISE will be a radio…

First of NASA’s SunRISE Satellites Complete – Will Track Hazardous Explosive Space Weather Events

A ‘potentially hazardous’ asteroid will zoom past Earth this week

NASA expects a potentially hazardous asteroid to zoom past Earth later this week. The asteroid’s approach can be seen in more detail on the NEO Earth Close Approaches list, which NASA keeps updated. Based on observations, the asteroid is between 42 to 92 feet in diameter. It will zoom past the Earth at more than 20,000 mph, but it won’t pose any threat to our planet. 2021 NY1: ‘Potentially Hazardous Asteroid’ Will Be Closely Flying by Earth Later This Month

An asteroid named 2021 NY1 could come close to hitting the Earth this month. The asteroid has been classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). It has also been classified as a near-Earth object owing to its predicted close pass by our planet. It is estimated to pass within 1,498,113km of the Earth sometime around September 22, 2021. The asteroid is estimated to fly by at a speed of 9.35kmps when it inches in towards Earth. It is a small- to average-size asteroid, estimated…

Potentially Hazardous Asteroid Nereus Which Flew Past Earth Could Be Mined for Precious Metals Worth Billions

Space mining is an idea that began taking hold at the turn of the century, and 10 years ago, it was passionately discussed. Many argued that space mining could revolutionise the commercial space economy by employing robots and private astronauts to explore and mine near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) for precious metals and even rare earth metals. Since then, however, there has been little noticeable progress. This idea again made its way into public discourse this weekend as an NEA — called 4660 Nereus — passed the Earth.…

A ‘Potentially Hazardous’ Asteroid Will Fly by Earth Soon: How to Watch It

A 1 km-long asteroid is set to zip past Earth next week. But there is no need to worry. The flyby will have a very safe clearance of 1.93 million km from Earth, meaning it would be more than 5.15 times farther away from us than the Moon. Scientists and astronomers keep a regular watch on incoming celestial objects and update people about interesting events to allow them to watch these with sophisticated equipment. While monitoring astrological events, they found that the asteroid (7482) 1994 PC1 will approach Earth…

Largest ‘potentially Hazardous’ Asteroid Might Come Closest To Earth Soon: Nasa

Potentially hazardous asteroid might come closest to Earth soon. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has alerted that an asteroid that is four times as big as the Empire State Building is speeding towards Earth.  According to a report published in LiveScience, NASA has classified the asteroid as "potentially hazardous". The asteroid is hurling through space at a speed of 47,200 mph (76,000 km/h), which is 20 times faster than a bullet. This…

Potentially Hazardous Asteroid Heading Towards Earth Captured in Image

A giant asteroid, estimated to be up to 1.3km in diameter, is heading towards us and will make a close pass by next month. The potentially hazardous asteroid, called 138971 (2001 CB21), will come as close as 4.5 million km. But scientists say there is no need to worry as the asteroid will be about 13 times the average lunar distance at its closest. However, the celestial object will be travelling at a stunning speed of over 26,800 miles per hour. The close encounter will happen on March 4 at about 3:00am ET (1:30pm…
