No Judgement by Lauren Oyler review – pointed views | Essays

Lauren Oyler, an American literary critic who writes for Harper’s Magazine and the New Yorker, believes her metier is under threat. “I am a professional, and I am in danger,” she declares in My Perfect Opinions, one of eight previously unpublished essays gathered in her first nonfiction book. She wonders if popular digital platforms such as Goodreads, where users can upload book reviews with minimal editorial filtering, will have long-term ramifications for the more considered, rigorous literary criticism that she gets …

No Judgement by Lauren Oyler review – modish observations from a rarefied world | Essays

Lauren Oyler is an American writer, very tall and very smart (or so I read). In 2021, she published her first novel, Fake Accounts, a plotless story about a young woman not unlike herself who is, as they used to say, very online. But she’s best known, at least in the US, as a critic whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, and whose 5,000-word takedown for the London Review of Books of Trick Mirror, a collection of essays by another thirtysomething American writer, Jia Tolentino, reputedly went viral (I am unable to…

E. Jean Carroll says looking at Donald Trump during his defamation trial last week was “like looking at nothing” or “an emperor without clothes.” The author and journalist who sued the former reality star and U.S. president after he claimed that she fabricated a sexual assault allegation against him to sell a book — an allegation a Manhattan federal jury found Trump liable for last year — spoke to CNN This Morning‘s Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly Monday. With the duo, Carroll discussed being…

Judgement at Tokyo by Gary J Bass review – of war crimes and punishment | History books

Every lawyer, politician and historian in Europe and America remembers Nuremberg, the trial of surviving Nazi leaders after the second world war. Few remember Tokyo, the international tribunal that arraigned the surviving Japanese leadership. And yet Tokyo lasted for more than two years (1946-8), as against Nuremberg’s brisk 11 months (1945-6), produced a far taller mountain of documents and – in contrast to the German trial – found every single defendant guilty. The Tokyo judges intended to build on Nuremberg’s…

Apple has faced a major setback in its longstanding €14.3bn tax dispute with the EU after an adviser to the bloc’s highest court said an earlier ruling over the tech giant’s business in Ireland should be thrown out and the case re-run.  Advocate General Giovanni Pitruzzella of the EU Court of Justice said in an advisory opinion that Apple’s win in a lower EU court should be shelved because of a series of legal errors. “It is therefore necessary for the General Court to carry out a new…

Bengaluru-based ecommerce startup Meesho on Friday slashed 15% of its workforce, affecting 251 employees, as cofounder and CEO Vidit Aatrey cited a “challenging macroeconomic environment” being the reason for the retrenchment. “I have a difficult news to share today. We are reducing the size of the Meesho workforce by 15%, affecting 251 employees,” Aatrey said in his email. “As leaders, we made judgement errors in over-hiring ahead of the curve...At the same time, we could have run our org structure in a more effective…

The Nigerian government has asked a London High Court to deliver judgement in its favour in the controversial Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) gas deal. The government in closing arguments at a trial earlier in the week urged the court to overturn an arbitration award in favour of P&ID which has now accrued interest worth $11 billion. The company claimed it entered into an agreement with Nigeria to build a gas processing plant but the deal collapsed because the Nigerian government did not…
