Ford recalls nearly 1.9M Explorer SUVs over safety issue

Ford has announced a recall of close to 1.9 million Explorer SUVs over a safety issue that could see the windshield trim panels coming off and flying into the path of other drivers. Clips that hold the panels in place have reportedly been coming loose, and so Ford will fix the issue that it believes affects about 5% of the recalled Explorers. The recall covers 1,889,110 Ford Explorer SUVs from the 2011-through-2019 model years, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford said it’s aware…

Waymo has been offering robotaxi rides to regular folks enrolled in its Waymo One ridesharing program in Phoenix and San Francisco, but the first freeway rides across Phoenix will be…

The automaker previewed this strategy, called the Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), at CES 2024, showing the first potential vehicle designs. All PBV derivatives will be based on a modular platform with a fixed cab, but all bodywork aft of the cab will be interchangeable, allowing the same vehicle to serve as a taxi during the day, a delivery van at night, and a personal…

Ford and GM EV drivers will be able to charge at Superchargers in February

Joel Patel / Digital Trends General Motors and Ford are getting Supercharger access quicker than we thought. According to a Tesla employee who recently spoke at a city planning committee meeting about a new Supercharger station, Ford and GM will get Supercharger access as early as 2024. Almost all major automakers have announced that they’ll switch to NACS (the same Tesla connector that Tesla uses) by 2025 — meaning that we should start to see non-Tesla cars with the connector sometime in mid-2024. Of course, it’s…

Jeep Wrangler 4xe has another battery recall over fire concerns

Andrew Martonik / Digital Trends America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has another battery recall on the books. Jeep just posted recall “B9A” (aka NHTSA recall 23V-787) for the Wrangler 4xe, and it’s a doozy: the recall focuses on potential fire risk with the 4xe’s 17.3kWh battery, and until it’s fixed owners are encouraged to stop charging their car and park it outside away from other vehicles: “An internally failed HV battery could lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off. A vehicle fire can result…

Honda has recalled more than 300,000 of its 2023-2024 HR-Vs and Accords over a safety issue, according to a document posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue concerns a missing seat belt part, which means that in the event of a crash, the belt “will not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury,” the NHTSA said. As of November 16, Honda had not received any reports of injuries or deaths related to the issue. Save on everything from laptops and…

Tesla brings in congestion fee for Supercharger stations

Tesla has been charging an idle fee for years in a bid to free up its Superchargers and prevent traffic jams at charging stations. But now it’s introducing a new congestion fee, which in some places will replace the idle fee. To recap, idle fees kick in when a Supercharger station is at 50% capacity. It means that if a car is left plugged in after it’s become fully charged, the owner has to pay 50 cents a minute until they leave. If the station is 100% occupied, the fee doubles to $1 a minute. The Tesla app lets…
