Latin nightclub La Rumba has owned the scene in Denver for 25 years

The luxury high-rises of Denver’s Golden Triangle cast long shadows, but so far, they’ve failed to darken the party at La Rumba. Its red sign remains a beacon for Latin dance and music fans, who have made the 25-year-old nightclub a cultural cornerstone on par with the museums that share this now-ritzy neighborhood just south of downtown Denver. “I hope we can survive this makeover that’s been happening, with old places getting wiped clean,” said Chris Swank, owner of La Rumba, as he eyed the lot across the street where…

Coronavirus Today: Feeling the loss of Latino grandparents

Good evening. I’m Karen Kaplan, and it’s Tuesday, Nov. 29. I hope you had a relaxing and COVID-free Thanksgiving break. Now here’s the latest on what’s happening with the coronavirus in California and beyond.By day, 65-year-old Reynaldo Rosales worked at a distribution center for health supplements in Santa Cruz County. His paychecks helped pay the rent for himself and his wife, Maria, along with two of their adult sons. During evenings and weekends, Reynaldo and Maria babysat their grandchildren, allowing the kids’…

Here are some books by Latino authors for the holiday season

If I had a dime for every time I hear Latinos aren’t a monolith, I’d be rich enough to run for mayor of Los Angeles. Yet news stories about Latinos still largely veer between the tired tentpoles of exploited immigrants and up-from-bootstraps success stories, usually produced by reporters with no roots in their subject and no interest in digging deeper. This is why I tell Latinos, when they complain about how the media depicts us, to do something about it. Write down or record anecdotes about who you are. Interview the…

John Leguizamo on Hollywood’s Latino representation problem

You can be as talented as Marlon Brando or Ingrid Bergman, you can write like William Shakespeare or Arthur Miller, you can have the screen presence of Ryan Gosling or Jennifer Lawrence. But if you look Latino, or if you have a Latino last name, the odds are against you in Hollywood. And by Latino, I mean born in Latin America. Not Spain, nor anywhere else in Europe. Those are white peoples. We Latinos are 19% of the population and the largest ethnic group in America, and we’ve been here long before the conquests of the…

Latino population grows and makes gains in US, but differences exist among groups

Projected Growth of the Latino Population by Number and Share, 2000-2060. Credit: A Mosaic, Not A Monolith: A Profile Of The U.S. Latino Population, 2000-2020 (2022). As the nation's Latino population has grown from 35 million in 2000 to more than 62 million, so have Latinos' overall levels of education, home ownership and economic security. But these gains also mask marked differences within the increasingly diverse Latino…

Column: Gil Cedillo went from a Latino lion to a Chicanosaurus

The first time Gil Cedillo speaks at length in the most notorious leaked audio in Los Angeles City Hall history, he discusses the joy of being a proud papi.“I did interview the other day ... and said I’m a grandfather, and I have a 47-year-old son, and a 2½-year-old little girl,” the Los Angeles City Council member said, four minutes into the conversation. “Estás loca con esa niña,” said Nury Martinez, Cedillo’s then-council colleague — you’re crazy about that little girl.“Look at these curls! You like these curls?”…

L.A. City Hall scandal strikes at the heart of Latino identity

Scanning all the media coverage of the leaked City Council audio — which at this moment seems poised to join Nixon’s Watergate tapes in the annals of recording infamy — it’s hard to decide which sections might be the most appalling. Councilmember Mike Bonin, who is gay, is dubbed a “little bitch.” The behavior of his adopted Black son is likened to that of a monkey. Jabs are exchanged about the child, with City Council President Nury Martinez cattily describing him as “an accessory.” The conversation is grotesque — a…

Nury Martinez’s racism renews fears of Black vs. Latino L.A.

She called the Black child of Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin “changuito,” or “a monkey,” who gets carried around like a Louis Vuitton handbag.Of Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón, she simply said, “F— that guy. He’s with the Blacks.” L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez says she was merely caught up in “a moment of intense frustration and anger” during an hour-long, secretly recorded meeting in October with L.A. County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera and fellow Latino Councilmembers Gil…
