Scientists Synthesise Next-Generation Wonder Material Graphyne, an Allotrope of Carbon, for the First Time

Scientists have long tried to create new allotropes (forms) of carbon because of their versatility and usefulness for the industry. But only limited success was achieved so far. That is set to change now. In a major breakthrough, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, US, have successfully synthesised the long-hypothesised “next-generation wonder material” graphyne. An allotrope of carbon, graphyne is similar to graphene, which is highly valued by industry. In fact, the research on graphene was awarded the…

Material You Wins The Popular iF Gold Desing Award

There are several different awards granted to tech companies every year. Some are for display technology and some are for camera technology just to name a few. Google won an award for its software design. According to 9To5Google, Material You, introduced last year, was given the iF Gold Design Award.Getting this award is a prestigious honor, even if a lot of people haven’t heard of it. The iF Award was established back in 1954, and it’s been a sought-after award ever since. Each year, there are thousands of entries, and…

2D Material Heterojunctions for “Post-Moore Era” Microelectronics

Credit: Light Publishing Center, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics And Physics, CASPhotonic integrated circuits (PICs) use photons as information carriers and feature ultra-high transmission speed, low delay, and anti-electromagnetic crosstalk. These advantages are expected to solve the bottleneck problems of microelectronic chips in terms of speed, power consumption, and integration density. It is of key…

EV battery costs set to spike as raw material shortages drags on

Attendees look at the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck at the Washington Auto Show in Washington on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.Bill Clark | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty ImagesThe cost to produce electric vehicles is primed to surge over the next four years, according to a new report, the result of scarcity in key raw materials needed to make EV battery cells."The tsunami of demand is coming," said Sam Jaffe, vice president of battery solutions for E Source, a research firm in Boulder, Colorado. "I don't think…

Research Team From Ireland Develops New Material to Capture Toxic Air Pollutants Like Benzene

Air pollution has been one of the major factors leading to climate change and global warming. Despite countless efforts to put a curb on toxic pollutants, there has been no permanent or temporary solution to the growing harm. Recently, a group of scientists from the University of Limerick, Ireland, have come up with an idea that can control air pollution by soaking the pollutants. They team has developed a new material that can engulf in atmospheric pollutants and toxic components. The material, with its unique features,…

Fans Love It When Comic Book Movies Match Up to the Source Material

When studios like Marvel, DC, or Sony adapt belove comic book titles for the big screen, they have to take into account balancing the needs of the story with the reality that an open-ended story that takes place over hundreds of issues released over a span of decades can’t reasonably fit into a three-hour film. So while fans tend to understand the need to take some liberties with the characters and storylines, they really appreciate when filmmakers make the attempt to get it right. Twitter user @HailEternal went…

Russian Scientists Synthesize a New Ultra-Hard Material

Credit: NUST MISISRussian scientists have synthesized a new ultra-hard material containing scandium and carbon. It consists of polymerized fullerene molecules with scandium and carbon atoms inside. The work paves the way for future studies of fullerene-based ultra-hard materials, making them a potential candidate for use in photovoltaic and optical devices, elements of nanoelectronics and optoelectronics, biomedical engineering as high-performance contrast agents, etc. The research study was published in the journal…

Astronomers Witness The X-Ray ‘Fireball’ of a Stellar Nova For The First Time

The brief, yet colossal eruption of a dead star undergoing a nova explosion has been captured by one of the most powerful X-ray instruments in space. The joint German-Russian eROSITA telescope, aboard the Spektr-RG space observatory in the L2 Lagrange point (yes, Webb's home), caught for the first time what is known as the 'fireball' phase of a classical nova. This X-ray data has finally confirmed via observation a 1990 prediction about the physics of novae.  The nova in question is known as YZ Reticuli, discovered on 15…

Toyota Sees Higher Material Costs Eating Into Profit

Toyota Motor Corp. projected a 21% drop in net profit for the current fiscal year despite higher revenue, blaming higher material costs. Toyota shares fell following the announcement Wednesday. The shares closed down 4.4% in Tokyo trading Wednesday. The Japanese car maker said its net profit in the January-March quarter, the final quarter of the previous fiscal year, fell 31% compared with a year earlier to the equivalent of $4.1 billion, although revenue was up 5.5%.…
