Mazda’s MX-30 PHEV is finally coming, with smaller battery and V2L… but only in Europe

Mazda has finally announced their long-rumored MX-30 plug-in hybrid, named the MX-30 R-EV, which uses a small rotary engine as a range extender to supplement a now even smaller battery. The new MX-30 R-EV was shown at the Brussels Motor Show today, though Mazda’s press release is light on details. All it mentions is that the car will have a 17.8kWh battery good for 85km (53mi) of range on the WLTP test cycle. This battery is half the size of the EV’s 35.5kWh, and is paired to an 830cc rotary…

Mazda revives MX-30 100-mile EV without rationale for buying it

Mazda fans rejoice! After a brief hiatus, the Japanese automaker has brought its 100-mile range EV back to the masses … of California. Mazda shared updated pricing and available packages of the 2023 MX-30 today, but to our (somewhat reserved) surprise, without the small rotary range engine previously promised – all for an MSRP higher than its previous model. Don’t get us wrong, we’re always excited to see fresh EV models announced, but the question that continually surfaces when discussing the…

After only 505 cars sold in the US, is the Mazda MX-30 sold out… for good?

After selling only 8 units last month and 505 in total, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 is now officially sold out in the US. But will it even come back next year, or is that the last we’ll see of this EV? Mazda had modest goals for the MX-30 from the beginning. When we drove it last year, Mazda told us its goal was to sell just 560 units in the US in the first model year, all in California – a state which requires manufacturers to sell a certain amount of zero-emission vehicles or face fines. In the end, it fell about 10%…

Mazda sells single digits of MX-30 in July 2022

Mazda has reported its sale numbers for July, which exhibit an overall decline compared to a year ago. What’s even worse, Mazda sold less MX-30 EVs than the number of seats some people have at their dinner tables. As a compliance EV with dozens upon dozens of better options available, the MX-30 is becoming a prime example of how negligible compliance EVs are in the growing market. The Mazda MX-30 has only been gracing the Earth with its EV compliant presence for about a year, but has done a pretty great job of…
