The US’s first large-scale offshore wind farm is about to come online

The first five offshore wind turbines at Vineyard Wind 1 will deliver power to the Massachusetts grid within weeks. Vineyard Wind 1 comes online Once online, Vineyard Wind 1’s five GE Haliade-X turbines will deliver around 65 megawatts (MW) of clean energy, enough to power 30,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts. Once the switch is flipped, the power from the turbines will interconnect to the New England grid in Barnstable, transmitted by underground cables that connect to a substation…

Disruptive offshore wind pyramid moves to real-world prototype testing

T-Omega's pyramid-based floating wind turbines are designed with the sole common-sense focus of keeping the cost of offshore wind down to an absolute minimum. With wave tank testing done, the company has now launched its first real-world prototype. The idea is quite simple: get rid of the large central pole that offshore turbines have inherited from land-based units. A single central tower will only stay upright, reasons T-Omega, if you've got about four tons under the water for every one ton above the water. And given…

The US’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm delivers its first power

New York’s South Fork Wind has become the first utility-scale offshore wind farm to generate power in the US. The first operational wind turbine at South Fork Wind sent clean power to Long Island today. The project has completed the installation of two turbines around 35 miles off Montauk, with all 12 SG 11-200 DD Siemens Gamesa turbines expected to be installed by early 2024.  The energy produced is being sold to the Long Island Power Authority under the terms of a 20-year agreement.…

Electric offshore wind farm service vessel can be charged from a turbine

Dutch ship builder Damen has announced an all-electric version of its 70-m-long hybrid service vessel designed to support offshore wind farm operations. And the company is aiming to charge the batteries direct from a wind turbine.Groups of giant turbines harvesting wind energy are becoming an increasingly common sight off coastlines around the globe, but the vessels used to meet their servicing needs are not as clean and green as they could be. That's where the SOV 7017 E comes in.Damen currently offers four Service…

In a first, this electric SOV is charged by offshore wind turbines

A Dutch shipbuilder has officially launched what it says is the world’s first electric service operations vessel (SOV) that can charge offshore. Damen Shipyards Group debuted the SOV 7017 Electric today at the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference 2023 in Amsterdam. At a length of 70 meters (230 feet) and a width of 17 meters (56 feet), the company says it’s the largest fully electric offshore wind SOV for maintenance. It features 60 cabins for crew and 40 technicians, storage, and workshops.…

Watch wind technicians ‘walk to work’ at US offshore wind farm Vineyard Wind 1 [video]

Check out this cool video on Reddit of a “walk to work” gangway that’s now being used by wind farm technicians at Vineyard Wind 1. tangotango112, who posted the video on r/Engineering Porn, wrote in the comments that they’re a former fisherman that drives one of two Chouest boats at Vineyard Wind 1. tangotango112 says they’re responsible for the “crew, ship, and environment,” and that they posted the video of the Ampelmann gangway in action because it’s “cool as shit and wanted to share it.” It’s…

China’s Goldwind installed a 16 MW offshore wind turbine in just 24 hours

Chinese wind turbine maker Goldwind has installed its massive 16 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine in a “record-breaking” 24 hours. Goldwind has already brought another of its GWH252-16MW wind turbines online; in September, that turbine set a new world record for electricity generation – in a typhoon – by an individual wind turbine in a 24-hour period. (It produced 384.1 megawatt-hours in 24 hours – enough to power nearly 170,000 homes.) Goldwind is now getting a whole lot faster at erecting…

Connecticut & Rhode Island’s offshore wind farm just got the construction go-ahead

Revolution Wind, Rhode Island and Connecticut’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm, can begin offshore construction in 2024. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) approved Revolution Wind’s construction and operations plan, and that’s the final decision the wind farm needs to start offshore construction.  BOEM’s final approval follows its Record of Decision issuance in August that concluded the environmental review. Energy provider Eversource and Danish renewables giant Ørsted’s…

New York just installed its first offshore wind turbine

The first wind turbine installation at South Fork Wind, New York State’s first offshore wind farm, is complete. The 130-megawatt (MW) South Fork Wind will be the US’s first completed utility-scale wind farm in federal waters. The first of 12 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines was hoisted into place at the project site 35 miles off Montauk, New York.  Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, the Aeolus, is installing the turbines. A crane places the steel turbine tower onto the foundation, and then…

Parliament Passes Bill to Levy 28 Percent GST on Online Games; Offshore Gaming Firms to Need Registration

Parliament on Friday approved amendments to the Central and Integrated GST laws to levy 28 percent tax on the full face value of bets in online gaming, casinos, and horse race clubs. The Central GST (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Integrated GST (Amendment) Bill, 2023, piloted by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, also make registration mandatory for offshore e-gaming companies operating in India. It also provides for blocking of access in case offshore platforms fail to comply with GST registration and tax payment…
