Stone Age ‘megastructure’ under Baltic Sea sheds light on strategy used by Paleolithic hunters over 10,000 years ago

Archaeologists have identified what may be Europe's oldest human-made megastructure, submerged 21 meters below the Baltic Sea in the Bay of Mecklenburg, Germany. This structure—which has been named the Blinkerwall—is a continuous low wall made from over 1,500 granite stones that runs for almost a kilometer. The evidence suggests it was constructed by Paleolithic people between 11,700 and 9,900 years ago, probably as an aid for hunting reindeer.

Study Sheds New Light on the Evolutionary Origin of Vertebrate Head

New research reveals that the vertebrate head mesoderm evolved from a distinct ancient mesoderm, challenging traditional views on the evolution of the vertebrate skull. Advanced microscopy techniques showed that the head mesoderm in lamprey embryos is fundamentally different from somites, indicating an early divergence in vertebrate evolution.Scientists are examining the development of lamprey embryos to shed light on the origin of the vertebrate head, which could enhance our understanding of ancestral vertebrates. The…

France’s Groundbreaking Fossil Discovery Sheds Light on Ancient Climates

Artistic reconstruction of the Cabrières Biota. Credit: Christian McCallNearly 400 exceptionally well-preserved fossils dating back 470 million years have been discovered in the south of France by two amateur paleontologists. This new fossil site of worldwide importance has been analyzed by scientists from the University of Lausanne, in collaboration with the CNRS and international teams. This discovery provides unprecedented information on the polar ecosystems of the Ordovician period.Paleontology enthusiasts have…

New study sheds new light on forests’ role in climate and water cycle

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain Forests, which cover a third of Earth's land surface, are pivotal in carbon storage and the water cycle, though the full scope of their impact remains to be fully understood. In a new study published in Nature Communications, researchers from Stockholm University and international colleagues provide new insights into the complex role forests play in the climate system and water cycle.…

What Is Science? Geneticist Sheds Light on Science’s True Nature With Occam’s Razor

A new paper highlights the significance of Occam’s Razor, arguing that its principle of simplicity is what sets science apart from pseudoscience and superstition. The study argues that a better understanding and emphasis on Occam’s Razor could improve public perception and education in science.Occam’s Razor, a principle suggesting that the simplest explanation that aligns with the facts should be chosen when confronted with multiple hypotheses, is more than just a scientific tool. According to a distinguished molecular…
