Colorado’s Hesperus Ski Area to remain closed through 2025

As ski passes for the 2024-25 season go on sale this month, one small Colorado resort has decided it will not open for at least the next year. Hesperus Ski Area near Durango said it “will not operate for the 2024/2025 season. … Both downhill and uphill skiing as well as winter tubing will not be available.” That means Hesperus will be closed for two consecutive seasons after a mechanical failure with its sole chairlift prevented the ski area from opening this winter. While Hesperus’ Bighorn Lift is still in disrepair,…

Winter is almost over, but ski season never ends at Thornton’s Snobahn

Ski season is nearing an end in Colorado’s high country, but it’s just beginning inside what used to be a big-box clothing store in a Thornton shopping center. That’s where the owners of Snöbahn opened their second location on Saturday at 14200 Lincoln St. The 38,000-square-foot space, previously home to a Stein Mart, features four “ski slopes” — inclined moving walkways — where people can learn how to ski and snowboard indoors or practice what they’ve already learned. Competitive skiers and riders can use it for…

Tahoe blizzard: Even ski resorts are urging people to stay away

With a dangerous, life-threatening blizzard bringing strong winds, frigid temperatures and an avalanche warning, even some Northern California ski resorts are urging people to stay away for now. “We know you are as excited as we are about this huge amount of snowfall, but please make safe decisions when it comes to travel,” Palisades Tahoe posted online after announcing both Alpine and Palisades would be closed for the day. Wind gusts reached 145 mph overnight, the resort posted on Facebook, and conditions were set to be…

Stranahan’s Aspen Whiskey Lodge opens March 9

Denver-based Stranahan’s distillery marks its 20th anniversary this year, and to celebrate, the whiskey maker is tracing its roots back to Aspen with a new tasting room and restaurant opening in March in the mountain town. The Aspen Whiskey Lodge, at 307 S. Mill St., serves alpine-inspired dishes alongside drams and cocktails featuring the distillery’s original spirits. It opens March 9 and given its proximity to Aspen Mountain, head blender Justin Aden expects it will be a popular après ski destination. “My favorite part…
