Colorado’s Hesperus Ski Area to remain closed through 2025

As ski passes for the 2024-25 season go on sale this month, one small Colorado resort has decided it will not open for at least the next year. Hesperus Ski Area near Durango said it “will not operate for the 2024/2025 season. … Both downhill and uphill skiing as well as winter tubing will not be available.” That means Hesperus will be closed for two consecutive seasons after a mechanical failure with its sole chairlift prevented the ski area from opening this winter. While Hesperus’ Bighorn Lift is still in disrepair,…

Vail’s “My Epic” app to get boost from AI next season

Vail Resorts will launch a new function in its My Epic app next season using advanced artificial intelligence to answer questions visitors have about ski conditions, dining options and other aspects of mountain operations. Called “My Epic Assistant,” the service will be available for the 2024-25 ski season at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone with plans to expand it to other resorts in future seasons. “For more than a decade, we have been committed to improving the guest experience through the use of…

Winter is almost over, but ski season never ends at Thornton’s Snobahn

Ski season is nearing an end in Colorado’s high country, but it’s just beginning inside what used to be a big-box clothing store in a Thornton shopping center. That’s where the owners of Snöbahn opened their second location on Saturday at 14200 Lincoln St. The 38,000-square-foot space, previously home to a Stein Mart, features four “ski slopes” — inclined moving walkways — where people can learn how to ski and snowboard indoors or practice what they’ve already learned. Competitive skiers and riders can use it for…

The Ikon Base Pass will cost $869, which is $138 more than the Epic Local pass. Year-over-year, Ikon increased $90, a 7.7%…

How will Arapahoe Basin change after sale to Alterra?

Arapahoe Basin, which has a reputation as one of the last independent, locals-focused major ski areas in Colorado, said yesterday that it is selling to Alterra Mountain Resorts. If the sale goes through, something that is expected to take place by the end of the year, the Summit County mountain will now join with Winter Park and Steamboat, which Alterra also operates. Alan Henceroth, who is the public face and COO of A-Basin, said he believes that Alterra will keep “the vibe alive” at The Legend (the ski area’s nickname),…

These 6 Colorado ski areas are great for remote work

On a sunny morning last winter, I found myself facing an oh-so-Colorado predicament. My friend Tom was visiting from Michigan and he wanted to go skiing. Of course I wanted to go with him, but I had two non-negotiable work deadlines to meet that day. What to do? Take my work to the ski area, of course. As Tom loaded up the ski gear, I packed my laptop and charger. We made our way up Boulder Canyon and arrived at Eldora Mountain a little before 9 a.m. While Tom skied over to the chairlift, I found a cozy corner in the West…
