It’s not all swords, bows, and magic, after all.…

Unicorn Overlord Is A Wholly Fresh Take On Tactical RPGs

If someone told me there's an upcoming tactics RPG full of anime-inspired characters, I would immediately respond, "Hell yeah, give it to me" and fully expect it to be a new Fire Emblem. Or I'd hope for another Valkyria Chronicles. Instead, what's filling that void is Unicorn Overlord, the next joint from Japanese developer Vanillaware. While it's best known for the cult side-scrolling action-RPGs Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown, and most recently the mind-bending story-driven 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, it…

Contain combines Control, SCP lore, and Ready or Not into one horrific tactical shooter experience

Certainly, there is a glut of Early Access shooters on the market right now, but some of them genuinely are trying to innovate. Contain, for one, is due to release in beta form on January 16, and it is trying to combine Control, SCP (Secure, Contain, Protect), and Ready or Not into one. Shoving experimental New Weird storytelling techniques into a tactical FPS envelope is, naturally, a rigmarole in and of itself, but Contain appears to be trying to go a step further still. Notably, the game features comprehensive…

These 16-bit Unicorn Overlord arrangements stir up some tactical nostalgia

It’s the new year, and there’s a bevy of new games on the way. One of them, Unicorn Overlord, sees Vanillaware tackling fantasy tactics. And the little slice of music that’s been shared, in 16-bit form, certainly sets the tone. Atlus has shared a roughly four-minute preview of selections from the 16-bit arranged music album for the upcoming Unicorn Overlord. Per the description, this album takes the music of Unicorn Overlord and rearranges it into 16-bit form for the game’s Monarch Edition (a.k.a. collector’s edition).…

2023 was a tactical renaissance for strategy games

The strategy game genre found itself in a renaissance this year — and you might not have noticed. Coming off the excellent Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Marvel’s Midnight Suns last fall, strategy games started and ended 2023 off strong from the AAA to the indie space. Unfortunately, in such a crowded year, many of the excellent games in this niche genre flew more under the radar. If you missed out on games like Fire Emblem Engage, Pikmin 4, Wargroove 2, and Last Train Home, you’re missing out on a golden age…

Unicorn Overlord aims to bring tactical RPGs back to the ‘90s

More than just about any other game studio, Vanillaware is known for its style. At the same time, the developer is constantly shifting between genres. It originally made waves with the side-scrolling action RPG Odin Sphere, and more recently released the sci-fi epic 13 Sentinels, which is part visual novel, part turn-based mech-vs-kaiju combat. Holding all of these disparate ideas together is Vanillaware’s incredible 2D art, along with a clear to desire to experiment.Given how the studio loves to jump around so much, it’s…
