Waxahatchee’s ‘Tigers Blood’ Review

“Drank someone else’s juice and left only the rind,” Katie Crutchfield boasts on her excellent new Waxahatchee album, Tigers Blood. She’s got a right to sound cocky. The long-time indie-rock underdog hero won herself a lot of new fans with Saint Cloud, her 2020 breakthrough hit, going for a laid-back style of heartland rock & roll twang. But Tigers Blood is even more rugged and confident, a master storyteller fully aware she’s on a hot streak. She sings about adult romance, struggling for sobriety, the day-to-day…

I wake up every day and I’m like: ‘I’ve changed.’” She lets slip a rueful chuckle. “I’m different now.”Crutchfield, 35, credits the shift to maturity, sobriety and success – although, she makes clear, they are all linked. Plains: I Walked With You a Ways review – Katie Crutchfield and Jess Williamson find a deep sense of ease | Waxahatchee

It would be hard for a duets record – and certainly one so congenially titled – not to sound companionable, but on their debut, Plains move past mere affability to bring a deep kind of ease. Plains brings together old friends Katie Crutchfield (AKA Waxahatchee) and Texas songwriter Jess Williamson, and much of the allure here lies in the duck and dive of their two voices: Crutchfield’s full of elasticity and billow, Williamson’s offering a sweetness and a trill. When they meet, as on the warmly unapologetic Hurricane,…
