Biden Admin Brags About Wind Energy the Same Day It Holds Huge Offshore Oil Auction

This morning, I received an exciting press release from the Department of Energy: The federal agency now has a strategy in place to significantly expand the U.S.’s offshore wind capacity. Under the shiny new “Advancing Offshore Wind...” plan, the DOE hopes to support the Biden administration’s existing goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.This Summer’s Hottest UmbrellaWow, sounds great! We love a clear roadmap for a federal agency. Plus, if we make it to 40 GW of offshore wind, that would be

Norway goes big with its first offshore wind tenders

Norway has opened its first tenders to build two big offshore wind farms – and one could become the world’s first large-scale floating project. Norway is a country of contradictions: It’s a large and unapologetic producer and exporter of oil and gas. It’s also the world leader when it comes to electric vehicle adoption. And nearly all of Norway’s electricity is generated from renewables, mostly from hydroelectricity. It’s decided to go large in the offshore wind race to meet rising electricity…

Siemens Gamesa’s largest offshore turbine will power the world’s second-largest offshore wind farm

Siemens Gamesa is going to supply its largest, most powerful offshore wind turbine to date to the UK’s East Anglia 3 – the world’s second-largest wind farm. The Spanish-German wind giant has signed a firm order with ScottishPower Renewables to supply 95 of its SG 14-236 DD wind turbines to East Anglia 3, a massive 1.4 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind farm 69 km (43 miles) off England’s Norfolk coast. The project will cover an area of around 305 sq km (118 sq mi). It will provide clean electricity…

Time Series for Climate Change: Forecasting Wind Power | by Vitor Cerqueira | Mar, 2023

Non-renewable energy sources impose a heavy ecological footprint on our planet. This issue prompted scientific and technological advances for clean energy sources. Instances include solar, wind, and ocean wave energy. These are friendly to the environment, unlike coal or oil.One of the reasons that delay the widespread of clean energy sources is their irregularity. They are highly variable sources, which makes their behavior difficult to predict. So, forecasting the conditions of these sources is a key challenge. Accurate…

A Chinese wind turbine maker just debuted Asia’s first recyclable blade

MingYang Smart Energy has launched a huge turbine blade made of over 95% recyclable materials – the first of its kind in Asia. MingYang says it’s the “first Chinese OEM to offer recyclable blades.” Spanish-German maker Siemens Gamesa and Danish company Vestas have also launched wind turbine blade recycling schemes. The 75.7-meter-long (248-foot-long) prototype recyclable blade was made using Taiwan-headquartered wind power material supplier Swancor’s EzCiclo recyclable thermosetting resin.…

Wind energy is recovering from a 2022 slump

The wind energy industry is recovering from a worrying slump in 2022, according to a new report from BloombergNEF. Growth in global capacity — encompassing offshore and onshore wind — dropped 15 percent last year. The decline in new offshore wind installations was more stark, falling 46 percent from 2021. Until last year, winds looked favorable for the industry. Turbines have gotten significantly cheaper over the past couple decades. Governments are setting targets to bring more renewable energy online. And within a few…

Researchers warn of ‘urgent’ need to understand impact of wind farms on precious peatlands

(A) Total turbines on blanket bog habitat by county. (B) Tracks length on blanket bog habitat by county. (C) Total area affected by wind farm developments on blanket bog habitat by county. (D) Density of turbines by 10 km2…

Leading Denier Think Tank Uses AI Image of Dead Whale and Wind Turbines

Readers of the daily email newsletter of one of the country’s leading right-wing, fossil fuel-funded think tanks were treated to a bizarre sight this week: an AI-generated image of a dead whale washed ashore on a beach in front of wind turbines, above a fearmongering story about offshore wind. Unfortunately, what is isolated to one newsletter today could spread around the right-wing ecosystem tomorrow.I cover climate and read breaking news about renewable energy every day; if there were a real photo of a dead whale in…

Eight old wind farms in Texas are about to get a second life

PivotGen repowers aging wind farms, and together with its partner ACEN, it’s acquiring eight wind farms in Texas to give them a new lease on life. Chicago-based PivotGen, which has to date repowered 2,176 MW of wind, and renewable energy platform ACEN have formed a partnership called UPC Power Solutions. The new partnership has signed an agreement to buy the Texas wind farms from energy storage developer Glidepath, and it will repair, upgrade, and repower them. Electrek spoke with Tim…
