Zara Larsson: Venus review – fervour on the dancefloor | Pop and rock

In the buildup to Larsson’s fourth album, the Swedish pop star variously described Venus’s 12 songs as “super fun”, “dancey” and a “collection of really good music”. If that sounds like faint praise, it’s also a neat way of distancing herself from pop’s current penchant for retroactively adding layers of meaning to songs constructed for eliciting simple pleasures. For Larsson, “super fun” pop is quite enough. So the deliciously camp wakeup call to a love-blind friend You Love Who You Love struts around a playful, sugar…

Zara Murao picks her favourite reads of 2023

Where are you really from? It’s a question that is impossible to answer. Go back just a few generations, and the mist begins to form. Lines, and oceans, are invariably crossed. Go back even further, and the story becomes a bit clearer – because it is shared. The Stone Age; the Iron Age; the trek out of Africa. A sweeping look at a species that has always been on the move (Hachette) Rewind again, and there are simply no clear answers. “A small part of the DNA of most modern humans – between 1 and 4 per cent –…

Zara Extends Lead Over H&M, Faces Down Threat From Shein

For years, Zara owner Inditex SA ITX -5.11% vied with H&M HM.B -8.47% Hennes & Mauritz AB for global fast-fashion supremacy. Now, the Spanish retailer is pulling ahead of its rival, partly as its pricier offering has set it farther apart from new low-price, online competitors such as Shein. The perception among shoppers that Zara is more upmarket than H&M has also given the brand more leeway to increase…

The fee applies for all Inditex brands, which include Pull & Bear and Massimo Dutti, according to a company spokesperson. The A Coruna, Spain

Zara Murao picks her favourite read of 2022

If we looked at natural resources the way we look at money, we’d be far more alert, more alarmed. The rare earth metals account is fast depleting; food is still seeing deposits but withdrawals remain too high; the groundwater account is in crisis; fossil fuels aren’t just crashing, they’re dragging other accounts down with them. If the planet were an investment bank, there’d have been a freeze on all activity decades ago, and emergency bailout plans would be in place. Instead, Earth’s resources are being managed only in…
