Tech Advisor gets a Sneaky Redesign with WordPress Migration
Those of you who follow Tech Advisor will know that over the past few years we’ve been working hard to clean up our act, vastly improving the user experience for our readers and ramping up the amount of high-quality editorial content you see on the site.
There’s also been a ton of work going on behind the scenes as we work to centralise our editorial teams in locations all around the world, ensuring we have expert editors available around the clock to share information, resources and best practices, and to provide commentary on the consumer tech issues of the day.
Following its migration from a local (.co.uk) to a global (.com) domain back in April 2021, Tech Advisor is now one of four globally focused consumer tech sites owned and operated by Foundry, a subsidiary of IDG Inc.
Tech Advisor continues to cover all veins of consumer tech, but always at its heart is mobile tech, from smartphones and tablets to laptops and wearables. It sits alongside sister sites PCWorld, Macworld and TechHive, which specialise in all things PC, Apple and smart home, respectively.
The next step
Today, we take the next step in Tech Advisor’s transformation, as we move our back-end content-management system from our homegrown setup to the popular WordPress platform, where we join our sister sites with one central repository for all the content we create.
I’m grossly understating the benefits when I say the move has untold rewards in terms of web-development resource, that it simplifies many of the editorial processes that are working in the background, and that it introduces new functionality that will directly translate to better content.
Blah, blah, blah, right? You’re likely wondering why you should care about a behind-the-scenes change that almost certainly is more important to us than it is to you. Well, alongside the upheaval at the back-end, we’ve managed to sneak in some changes at the front-end, too.
The new Tech Advisor site is much cleaner and easier to navigate than it ever has been before, with a more thoughtful, modern design that is a lot easier on the eyes, and hopefully more enjoyable to read. The site structure has been simplified, making it quicker to find the content you want to read. And even the hideous font that the editorial team has been complaining about for years is now a thing of the past.
So, it’s basically a win-win. Yet a change such as this does not happen without a huge amount of prep and, although we’ve completed multiple rounds of rigorous testing, it’s quite possible some gremlins are still running rampage. Please do feel free to drop myself or Tech Advisor’s Executive Editor, Jim Martin, an email should you experience any issues with usability. Otherwise, we hope that you enjoy the new site as much as we are.
