Trader Joe’s Workers Vote to Form Union at Massachusetts Store

Trader Joe’s employees voted to unionize at a store in Massachusetts, establishing the grocery chain’s first union.

Employees in Hadley, Mass., voted 45 to 31 in favor of unionizing, the National Labor Relations Board said. The federal agency said the parties have five business days to file objections. If none are filed, the results will be certified and the employer must begin bargaining with the union.

The union group, represented by an independent labor organization called Trader Joe’s United, said organizers plan to secure a contract that will benefit and protect employees.

Trader Joe’s said the company is prepared to begin discussions with union representatives to negotiate a contract for the store employees.

Trader Joe’s, a privately held grocer with more than 535 locations across the U.S., is known for quirky products and wine deals, has a strong following among shoppers and is often credited with introducing new products or flavors at low prices.

Thursday’s result marks the latest unionization efforts by U.S. employees who say they are pushing for higher pay and benefits as companies struggle to hire and retain employees.

At Trader Joe’s in Hadley, workers have said that the pandemic, unionization efforts at other companies and erosion of benefits led them to begin organizing.

There are other unionization efforts at the grocer beyond Massachusetts: A Trader Joe’s store in Boulder, Colo., this week filed to have an election with the NLRB and a store in Minneapolis is planning to vote in August, the federal agency said.

Many U.S. grocers increased hourly wages for workers at the start of the pandemic but phased out so-called hazard pay months later. The labor market has tightened, industry executives say, and companies have offered overtime pay for workers to cover shifts, sick pay for employees who need to quarantine and raised pay or provided bonuses to appeal to potential hires.
