Meta has added video messages to its WhatsApp platform. The company announced that the feature is live and builds on the foundations laid down by voice messages — a feature Meta says “changed the way people communicate.” And possibly, so will video messages.

The new video messages feature allows WhatsApp users to send end-to-end-encrypted instant video recordings of up to 60 seconds in length. Meta hopes these instant video messages “will be a fun way to share moments.”

How do video messages on WhatsApp work?

Meta’s goal was to make it easy for WhatsApp users to share instant videos in a familiar manner. And to achieve that goal, the video message feature is just one tap away.

Users only need to tap the existing voice message button once to switch to video message mode and then hold the record video button to create an instant clip.

WhatsApp video messages are played automatically on mute upon users opening the chat. Users can then tap the video to watch it with the sound enabled.

The company says the video messages feature is rolling out but is not yet accessible everywhere. However, it will be available to all WhatsApp users in the coming weeks. And yes, that includes Samsung Galaxy smartphone users worldwide.
