1982 model Hindustan Trekker SUV with hard top looks unique

Hindustan Motors had several models on sale in India. The most popular and commonly seen vehicle on road was Ambassador. The other car which was popular was the Contessa sedan. Hindustan Motors also used to sell an SUV in the market. It was called Trekker and was not the most good looking vehicle from the manufacturer. The Trekker had a very utilitarian boxy design and was used in many parts as people carrier. Hindustan Trekker is now rarely seen on our roads and here we have one such video of a 1982 model Trekker SUV which gets a custom built hard top installed on it.

The current owner of this Trekker is actually a tour operator and they had bought the car from Bangalore in an auction. The Trekker seen here in the video is a actually a 1982 model vehicle. The Trekker came with a soft top roof from factory as standard. It had a very unique or odd design when compared to other vehicles during that time.

It came with an extremely boxy design and it did not even have doors. The soft top on this Trekker was removed and replaced with a custom built hard top from a coach factory in Bangalore. The plate from the body manufacturer is still there on the car. The Trekker SUV was converted into a station wagon as per the owner’s request. The front gets round headlamps and turn indicators right below it. The large grille at the front is retained. Hindustan Motors logo has been removed from the bonnet and replaced with a metal plate that says Station Wagon.

Hindustan Trekker is a vehicle that shares many of its parts with Ambassador. The customised version of the Trekker was no different. It used door handles from Ambassador sedan. The doors were custom made units with butterfly window glasses. The side profile of the Trekker has been completely redesigned and it looks more like a station wagon from this angle. The original steel rims have been retained. This is the same unit that is also used in Ambassador. It looks like the work on this car has not finished yet.

The exterior has been finished in Sky Blue shade which gives it a retro look. The interior gets dark coloured fabric seats and the similar material can also be seen on the door pads as well. Trekker is a three row SUV. The last row gets side facing bench seats. The car looks well-kept from outside but interior needs some work. Many of the switches and lights in the cabin are old if not original. The car offered a comfortable ride quality. The original engine on this Trekker has been replaced with a diesel engine from Matador van. The engine generates 44 Bhp and 105 Nm of peak torque. The vlogger even takes it out for a drive. Trekker was not the most popular car in the market when it got launched but it is definitely a car that would remind you how car manufacturers in India have improved in terms of design and features.
