2022 Hyundai Tucson SmartSense ADAS: Safety Features Explained

0 50

Hyundai Tucson is back in India in its all-new fourth-generation iteration. The all-new SUV will take a position above the Alcazar in the model line-up. While Hyundai is yet to announce the trims and prices of the all-new Tucson, we got a glimpse of what the all-new Tucson can do. The new Tucson will offer SmartSense, which is another name for ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance System. While we did not get in the driver’s seat of the new Tucson, we saw what the new feature can do in a controlled environment to mimic real-life situations.

How the ADAS works?

We have seen the ADAS features working in the cars like the all-new Mahindra XUV700 and the MG Astor. In the all-new Tucson, the ADAS works on similar principles. The all-new Tucson uses radar and a high-resolution camera to detect various objects on the roads and also identify speed limits by reading the sign boards. Well, we say that we saw a glimpse of the technology as we only tested some of the many things that the new Tucson can do.

Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA)

FCA will be one of the most used features on the Indian roads. It is for the drivers who remain distracted while driving or use phones. The FCA detects pedestrians, two-wheelers, bicycles, cars and trucks instantly. The Tucson then sends a visual and audio warning to the driver through the instrument cluster. If the driver fails to slow down or react, Tucson will apply partial braking.

If the driver remains unresponsive to the precautionary braking, Tucson applies full brakes and ensures that the collision is avoided. The FCA does not work with animals like dogs.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control works by detecting the speed of the car in front and following it without the intervention of the driver. You can set up a maximum cruise speed for Tucson. It will follow the automobile in front of you until it exceeds the maximum speed set by you. For example, if you set the cruise at 80 km/h and the car in front of you slows down to 50 km/h, the Tucson will smoothly transit to slow down and will speed up again as the car in front speeds up. However, if the car you’re following exceeds 80km/h, Tucson will keep on cruising at 80 km/h as set by you. The Tucson even comes to a complete stop if the vehicle in front stops and starts rolling again. But the stop time has to be less than 3 seconds. Else, you need to use the accelerator to move the car again.

You can set the most distance between the Tucson and the car in front using the stalk. This sure is a nifty feature and will be very useful on the Indian expressways.

Blind Spot Monitoring System

The all-new Tucson coming to India is a big car. Just like many other vehicles, it creates a few blind spots. But Tucson gets 360-degree cameras that can be activated using the turn indicator. If you want to turn left, you can switch on the indicator and the display in the instrument cluster will show the feed from the left camera eliminating any blind spot. Also, if another automobile is in the blind spot of Tucson, there will be a warning on the ORVMs and the instrument cluster.

Lane Keep Assist

If there are lane markings on the roads, the Hyundai Tucson will make sure that you’re following the lane without any effort. The lane keep assist and lane departure warning work by detecting the lane markings and giving a warning to the driver by vibrating the steering wheel whenever the car is about to exit the lane. Also, the lane keep assist works by automatically turning the steering wheel to position the Tucson in the centre of the lane.

Safe Exit Assist

Now, this is a unique feature that will avoid a lot of accidents with pedestrians and cyclists. The Safe Exit Assist monitors any kind of activity around the car after you park the vehicle. If it detects another car, pedestrian or cyclist coming toward the vehicle, it will warn the passenger of the Tucson before opening the door. This works with all four doors and we loved this feature the most.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist

Most of us fail to see the traffic crossing us when we reverse from a parking spot. The Tucson will help in such situations by detecting the movement of vehicles while reversing from a parking spot. Again, it works by lighting up a warning on the instrument cluster and then applying the brakes.

Summary

Now, we have driven a few budget cars with the ADAS and most of them work in the same way. But the ADAS in Tucson does feel more refined. As Tucson sells around the world and is one of the best-selling SUVs, Hyundai sure has fine-tuned the system after years of usage. Hyundai has also tested India-specific attires for pedestrians including saree and dhoti to ensure that the system works flawlessly on Indian roads.

We will drive the all-new fourth-generation Tucson next month and will bring you the list of complete updates and our first thoughts on the crossover as well.
