2023 Honda Amaze with RDE compliant engine is here: walkaround video

From 1st April 2023, new set of emission norms known as Real Driving Emission (RDE) will be implemented across the country. It is basically phase 2 of the BS6 emission norms that were introduced in 2020. Manufacturers are now preparing to make the engines compliant with the new emission norms and that means the prices of the car would go up. Honda is probably the first manufacturer to launch the new Amaze compact sedan in the market with an engine that is compliant with the RDE norms. Here we have a quick walkaround of the 2023 Honda Amaze that has started arriving at the dealerships.

The car seen here in the video is the base variant which comes with no feature at all. The price for the RDE compliant Honda Amaze starts at Rs 6.93 lakh ex-showroom. When compared to the 2022 version, Honda has made minor changes to the bumper and grille of the car. The front grille on the sedan is now the same as seen on the higher variants. It comes with thin chrome strips on the grille. The  headlamps are halogen and the bumper gets chrome garnishes around the fog lamp area.

There are no fog lamps present as this is the lower variant. The sedan continues to get fender-mounted turn indicators, manual ORVMs finished in black, black door handles and 14 inch steel rims. There is a black roof-mounted antenna and the rear bumper also comes with chrome garnish which was not present in the older version. The car gets a basic-looking interior which is finished in beige and black. The door pads, dashboard are all hard plastic. There is a space for installing an aftermarket infotainment system and speakers. The steering wheel does not have any control and cannot be adjusted in any manner. The seats are fabric and everything else remains the same. There are manual AC control switches on the center console.

With the new emission norms in place, Honda has completely dumped the diesel engine options from all their models. Tuning a diesel engine to meet the new RDE norms will make the car more expensive and that is not going to benefit the manufacturer. As per the new norms a vehicle requires to have an on-board self-diagnostic device that will monitor real-time driving emission levels. The device will constantly monitor parts like catalyitc converter and oxygen sensors to ensure that they are meeting the emission standards. RDE test measures the pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxide emitted by vehicle in real-time instead of a laboratory.

As part of making the car RDE compliant, manufacturers will have to upgrade the semiconductors to monitor throttle, crankshaft positions, air intake pressure, temperature of the engine, content of the emissions form exhaust and programmed fuel injectors to control the level of fuel burnt. Honda Amaze continues to get a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated engine that generates 88 bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque.
