5-door Mahindra Thar off road SUV caught on video: Launching in 2023

0 38

Mahindra is extensively testing the 5 door version of the Thar off roader, and the vehicle was recently caught on video. The video shows the top of the 5-door Thar, and while the test mule is heavily camouflaged, there seems to be a kink in the roof. While the 3 door new Mahindra Thar has a relatively flat roof, the 5 door version seems to have a roof that’s reminiscent of the previous generation Scorpio. The taller rear section of the roof – if its translates into production – is possibly a design meant to give rear passengers more head room. This design will also make the 5-door Thar look different from the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Here’s the video.

On the inside, the 5-door Thar will offer two rows of seating: captain seats in the front row and a bench seat capable of fitting three people in the second row. The additional set of doors will make getting in and out of the 5-door Thar a lot more easier, and this should be a major selling point. Many buyers have shied away from the 3 door Thar as it’s not practical as a family car. This is a gap that the 5 door Thar will fill.

Luggage space is also expected to be plentiful in the 5 door model. What the bigger That won’t get though is a soft, convertible top. A hard top will be standard across all trim levels. It’ll be interesting to see if Mahindra goes with a full metal roof for the 5 door Thar or if the automaker opts for a fiber roof that allows for a removable panel or two. From the looks of it, there’s no sunroof on offer.

The 5-door Thar will get the same petrol and diesel engines that are on offer with the 3-door model but with uprated power and torque outputs. The grapevine suggests that the engines will have the same tune as the Mahindra Scorpio. This means 172 Bhp-420 Nm for the 2.2 diesel engine’s manual variant and 172 Bhp-450 Nm for the automatic variant. The 2 liter turbo petrol motor on the 5 door Thar is expected to make 197 Bhp of peak power and 380 Nm of peak torque on the automatic variant, and the same power but 370 Nm of peak torque on the manual trims. 6 speed manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer. A four wheel drive layout with low and high ranges is likely to be standard across all trims.

Mahindra is skipping the 2023 Indian Auto Expo, and is expected to have multiple events spread across the year to introduce new vehicles. One such event, scheduled for the middle of 2023 is expected to launch the 5-door Thar. The larger version could be priced about Rs. 2 lakh more than the 3-door model, variant to variant. The 5-door Thar will retain its rugged underpinnings – a body-on-ladder chassis and independent suspension with long travel and articulation for off road use. It’ll be sold as a lifestyle vehicle that will get the approval of the family!
