5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny spotted testing in Ladakh with Grand Vitara and Thar

0 43

The rumours of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny arriving officially in India in a five-door guise next year are going strong, ever since the first images of test mules got spied undergoing test runs on the Indian roads. Till now, the test mules were only seen while rolling on the urban roads in and around National Capital Region. We have got our hands on a recent image of a test mule of Jimny on test in the treacherous geographical conditions of Ladakh.

An Instagram post uploaded by ‘Indiancarfundamentals’ shows a fully-camouflaged Maruti Suzuki Jimny being driven on the roads of Ladakh in the Himalayas. In the image, we can see that the test mule of the Jimny is followed by a Grand Vitara and a Mahindra Thar, the latter of which is known to be a direct rival to the Jimny for its image as a proper off-roader for the urban audience.

While the Maruti Suzuki Jimny seen in the image is a fully camouflaged test mule, there are a few design details which have been retrieved from it. Firstly, the five-door Jimny is retaining the stance and squared and upright design language of the three-door model sold overseas. This new five-door Jimny is expected to get the same rectangular grille with squared-off inserts, rounded headlamps, metal front bumper and upright and angular bonnet lines as the three-door version.

While the side profile of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is not much visible in the image here, there are some highlights which can be seen, such as flared wheel arches, upright and vertical pillars, and rectangular window panels. It gets the same chunky-looking black alloy wheels which are currently there in the global-spec version. The image also doesn’t reveal the rear profile of the five-door Jimny, but it will continue to get the tailgate-mounted spare tyre and rectangular tail lamp clusters.

Even the cabin of the test mules of the five-door Suzuki Jimny is visible in one of the spy shots that surfaced, which shows that this new version of the Jimny will remain unchanged from the inside. This new five-door Jimny will continue to come with a three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel and an old-school instrument console with dedicated housings. It will also get a touchscreen infotainment system, controls for the air conditioner in the centre console and rounded AC vents. The model in the pictures has an automatic transmission lever as well.

Powered by a petrol engine

In all likelihood, the new five-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be getting the new-generation 1.5-litre four-cylinder K15C naturally-aspirated petrol engine with the carmaker’s smart hybrid system. This engine will be available with both 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options and will claim around 103 PS of power output and 136 Nm of torque output.

Like the global-spec version, the five-door Jimny will also get Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel-drive system as standard throughout the lineup. With this, the new Jimny will pose a fresh challenge to the only lifestyle four-wheel-drive SUV currently available, the Mahindra Thar.
