Owning a car is still a big dream for many people in a country like ours. Even today, the majority of people rely on two-wheelers and public transport to commute. However, lately, we have been witnessing a trend among young entrepreneurs who are collecting expensive and exotic cars for their garages. While we have many who love exotic cars, there is also a section of car enthusiasts, including politicians, actors, and other popular personalities, who have a soft spot for classic or vintage cars. Maintaining such cars is actually a bigger task than maintaining many modern exotics. Here, we have an incident where a vintage car owned by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Kamaraj has been neatly restored.

The car shown in the pictures is a 1952 model Chevrolet Deluxe sedan. The Chevrolet Deluxe is a trim line of Chevrolet automobiles that was marketed from 1941 to 1952 and was the volume sales leader for the market during the 1940s. The car was restored by Torque Max Automotive, a restoration firm based in Krishnagiri. It took them almost 30 days to fully restore the vehicle, which is actually a record since sourcing parts for such an old vehicle is often a difficult task.

For Ashwiniraj Varma, the owner of Torque Max Automotive, this project meant more than just a job. Speaking to the media, he said, “My grandfather BKPM Munusamy Gounder was the youngest MLA in Kamaraj’s term, and my father and the present Congress chief K. S. Alagiri were classmates. So, when they were looking for someone to restore the car, we came in.”

The car was displayed in a room at the Kamarajar Arangam under the control of TNCC Charitable Trust. When they decided to restore the vehicle, Ashwiniraj and his team came into the picture due to their familial connection.

We have written about and featured several videos where people are seen restoring classic cars, and it usually takes months and sometimes even years to complete a project. As these cars are no longer manufactured, sourcing parts becomes a major challenge. We have seen people struggle to restore a car like the Ambassador for the same reason.

In this case, Ashwiniraj and his team had to source parts from different parts of the world. Since this car was never officially sold in the Indian market, they had to source many parts from the USA. Many rusted panels and parts had to be replaced with custom-made ones. Some of the other panels were restored by a Mumbai-based manufacturer who has a workshop in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The finished product looks very neat. K. Kamaraj was a Congress party leader and one of the former Chief Ministers of the Madras state (now known as Tamil Nadu). The Chevrolet Deluxe was used by him and was available in a variety of body styles, including a 2-door coupe, 2-door Cabriolet, 4-door sedan, and a 4-door station wagon. The one used by the former Chief Minister was the 4-door sedan. Just like any American car, it was also powered by a massive 3.5-liter engine generating 90 PS. The engine was mated to a 3-speed manual gearbox.
