A Failed Attempt to Stop Wrong-Side Driving

0 23

In India, one of the most common types of violations that many people make is wrong-side driving or riding. Many people who engage in this behavior do not even consider it an offense. This simple mistake, made to save a few minutes and some fuel, often results in major accidents. The government often takes measures to reduce such offenses, but it seems that there are some who do not like to follow the rules at all. Recently, Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) installed tire killer spikes in Raipur to reduce or put a stop to wrong-side driving. Here is a video that shows how this system became almost immediately useless.

The video has been circulating on various social media platforms. In this video, we see a couple of vehicles passing over the tire killer spikes from the wrong side without any damage. They are able to do it without any issues. The pillion on the scooter or bike gets down and stands on the spike. This brings the sharp edges down to the road and makes way for the bike to go up without any damage. People who are riding without a pillion can also be seen going over the spike by slowly riding on the spike. As the spikes are hitting the tires at a very low speed, they are not damaging the wheels or tires in any manner.

While some of them are wearing helmets, there are others who are not. All of them are definitely riding on the wrong side. We also see a woman helping her husband get the bike across the spike by standing on the spike. This system has been implemented in many parts of the country, and almost everywhere it has been a failure. This system works fine for some days, and after that, people simply start ignoring it. In Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar, people ripped the spikes off months after they were installed.

The tire killer spikes seen here were installed by the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC), in collaboration with the traffic department. As part of the initiative, the authorities installed tire killers at three locations: Ring Road number 1 near Kake Di Hatti, the Expressway near Fafadih, and at Gaurav Path Multilevel Parking. These were the locations where the most instances of wrong-side riding were recorded.

Other than installing the tire killers, they have also installed signboards to warn drivers not to drive on the wrong side. From the video, it is clear that the riders have completely ignored these signs. The spikes do not damage the tires when driven through the correct side; however, if you drive in the opposite direction, it can easily rip your tire. The purpose of installing tire killers in Raipur was to prevent vehicles from moving in the wrong direction, improve traffic management, and also reduce accidents caused by driving on the wrong side of the road.

The authorities had planned to extend this project to other parts of the city after analyzing whether the project was a success or not. Driving on the wrong side of the road is extremely dangerous, and there are several cases where such riders have lost their lives due to such behavior. These riders are not only a threat to themselves but also to others.
