Electric mobility is undoubtedly the future of transportation but sometimes incidents like these do make us wonder that is the future entirely safe with Electric vehicles? This question arrives due to the courtesy of a recent fire incident that happened to a gentleman driving to his work in his fairly new Tesla Model Y in Canada. According to the owner of the Tesla Model Y, he narrowly escaped his demise as his car doors got locked up soon after the car alerted him of an unnamed error, just a few moments later his car went up in flames.

The owner Jamil Jutha elaborated on his incident that as he was driving to work in his eight months old 2021 Tesla Model Y. His vehicle allegedly sent an error warning on the dashboard and subsequently shut down. Following this he noticed some smoke filling in the cabin of his car because of which he panicked and broke his window. He stated that “I had to smash the window to get out of the car. I kicked through the window. Everything stops. The power didn’t work. The door didn’t open. The windows didn’t go down so I’m thinking I need to get the f*ck out of this car so I kicked through.”

After Jutha escaped from the car, the fire department was notified and they arrived five minutes later at the intersection where the incident occurred. The firemen then quickly extinguished the fire and took control of the situation.

As for the reason behind this unexpected fire, it is still unclear. Tesla has not officially responded to the incident but it is also not very often that a Tesla catches on fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the United States Department of Transportation, every 19 million miles travelled, a vehicle fire occurs. Although between 2012 and 2021, Tesla reports that only one Tesla vehicle caught fire for every 210 million miles driven.

In other EV fire news, recently the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) submitted a report on the cause of recent EV two-wheeler fires in the country. According to the organization, they have found serious defects in the batteries. DRDO’s wing Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) conducted the investigations and stated that the bad battery design and serious defects in the batteries and EV modules are the reasons for the recent fires across the nation.

Sources have claimed that these defects have occurred because the manufacturers have sourced low-grade materials to cut the cost. The government has even summoned the EV manufacturers to hear the companies for using such low-grade materials.

After their electric scooter fires in April, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which is part of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, issued notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors. More reports of electric scooter fires are being investigated by the consumer watchdog, which may issue similar notifications to other electric vehicle manufacturers as well.
