Ahmedabad Metro is preparing to extend its reach by linking Gift City to Gandhinagar. The expansion will relieve traffic congestion, shorten travel times.

India has witnessed a steep rise in its metro rail network in recent years due to the large-scale metro development projects that are underway in several cities.

Every mode of public transport system is important, and this infrastructural development is taking place in India with the goal of providing commuters with congestion-free routes, enhanced connections, and promoting sustainable mobility.

In this major development for transportation infrastructure, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is preparing to extend its reach by linking Gift City to Gandhinagar. With the completion of this metro by June 2024, this expansion holds great promise for improved accessibility and connectivity in the area.

In a conversation with Businessline, Pushkar Singla, Chief General Manager (Corporate Planning), GMRC said, “We are going to conduct a trial run for the priority reach comprising 20-odd km of the Phase-II of Ahmedabad metro in April, which will connect the Narendra Modi stadium at Motera to GIFT City and Sector-1 of Gandhinagar city.”

“If we get the necessary permission, then commercial metro rail operations to GIFT City and Gandhinagar will start in June,” Singla said, who is also the chief PRO of the project.

It is worth noting that the GIFT City and Gandhinagar will be connected to the Ahmedabad Metro network under Phase-II of the project, benefitting over 20,000 employees of the fintech hub. The project is part of the ongoing efforts to improve urban transit and enable seamless travel between key economic and administrative hubs.

Known as India’s first international financial services hub, Gift City will now soon be connected directly to the state capital, Gandhinagar. This not only assists daily commuters, but also boosts the economic vibrancy of the connected areas.

The expansion is expected to relieve traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and provide a more efficient mode of transportation for residents, workers, and visitors. This project, which aims to modernise and integrate the metro network, is consistent with the larger concept of sustainable urban development.

As construction work progresses, stakeholders are hopeful about the project’s positive impact on the overall socio-economic landscape of the region. The ongoing development of the Ahmedabad Metro demonstrates Gujarat’s dedication to promoting growth, connectivity, and accessibility, projecting the state as forward-thinking and progressive.

Talking about Phase I of the Ahmedabad Metro, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2022, certain sections are yet to be completed. This comprises a 1.4-km-long section between Thaltej and Thaltej Gam on the East-West Corridor. It is expected that this project will be completed by March 2024.

In addition, the Sabarmati metro station continues to remain non-operational. The station is part of a multi-modal hub being built as part of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train project.
