Amazon shuts down cloud gaming app on Windows and Mac

0 41

Amazon has decided to discontinue providing dedicated Windows or Mac apps for its Amazon Luna game streaming service. The download links for those apps have been quietly removed by Amazon in the past few days.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to 9to5Google that they have decided to discontinue the Windows and Mac apps for Luna. This decision was because Luna was being used more frequently by Windows and Mac users through their web browsers instead of the dedicated apps.

“When we see customers love something, we double down. We optimised the web browser experience with the full features and capabilities offered in Luna’s native desktop apps so customers now have the same exact Luna experience when using Luna on their web browsers. We believe firmly in the future of cloud gaming and will be sunsetting the Luna PC and Mac native desktop apps so we can invest more time and resources innovating on behalf of our Luna customers,” said the Amazon spokesperson.

In 2020, Amazon Luna was introduced with apps for Windows and Mac. But now, the dedicated apps for these platforms have been removed. Instead, Amazon Luna offers a dedicated app for Fire TV and streaming devices. The Fire TV app is compatible with Android TV and Google TV as well.

Users of other platforms can access it through supported web browsers, including on smartphones.

For a monthly subscription fee, users can access a vast library of over 100 games with our service. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’ll also have access to a rotating selection of games at no extra charge.

Amazon is still offering the Luna controller for $69.99. This controller has built-in Wi-Fi that connects directly to Amazon’s Luna game servers, resulting in lower latency gaming. However, Amazon has not disclosed the number of subscribers or total users since the launch of Luna.
