Anand Mahindra took delivery of a spanking new Scorpio-N SUV last week, and made an announcement on Twitter. The Chairman of the Mahindra group followed it up with another tweet, asking Twitter users to suggest a name for his SUV. After a slew of name recommendations he received on the social media outlet, Mr. Mahindra shortlisted two names – Bheem and Bichhu, following which he conducted a poll to choose between these names. The poll saw over 77,000 votes, and an overwhelming majority of Twitter users voted for Bheem. Mr. Mahindra now calls his Scorpio-N as Bheem. Bheem (a derivative of Bhima) is the name of a mythological character from the Mahabharata, and signifies strength, heft and power. Bicchu, on the other hand, quite literally is the Hindi word for Scorpion.

The all-new Scorpio-N is not the first Mahindra SUV in Mr. Anand Mahindra’s garage. Mr. Mahindra, who always drives or is driven in vehicles from the Mahindra stable, also owns an Alturas luxury SUV and the TUV300 Plus multi-utility vehicle.

In the recent past, he also had a TUV300 sub-4 meter SUV. Other Mahindra vehicles that Mr. Anand Mahindra has owned includes the first-generation Scorpio, the Invader lifestyle vehicle and various other Jeeps produced by Mahindra in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Apart from Mr. Anand Mahindra, prominent people such as Olympian Geeta Phogat and News Anchor Anand Narasimhan have also taken delivery of the Mahindra Scorpio-N. Deliveries commenced on the 26th of September, the first day of Navratri. Mahindra received 50,000 bookings for the Scorpio-N in 30 minutes of online bookings opening. Bookings have now been suspended as Mahindra wants to first service existing orders.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N is the latest generation of the SUV, which was first launched in 2002. The Scorpio-N continues to retain a body-on-ladder frame layout but is all-new. Available in 6 and 7 seat variants, the Scorpio-N is priced from Rs.  11.99 lakh for the base trim. The Scorpio-N is sold with two engine options: a 2 liter-4 cylinder turbocharged petrol called the mFalcon and a 2.2 liter-4 cylinder turbocharged diesel called the mHawk. Both engines get 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options. However, only the diesel engine gets a four wheel drive layout on the top-end trims.

The diesel engine on the Scorpio is available in three states of tune: 130 Bhp-300 Nm (base manual diesel), 172 Bhp-370 Nm (diesel manual higher trims) and 172 Bhp-400 Nm (diesel automatic top-end trims). The petrol engine is offered with 200 Bhp-370 Nm (manual) and 200 Bhp-380 Nm (automatic) trims. A rear wheel drive layout is standard on the SUV.

As for features, the Mahindra Scorpio-N is quite loaded. The SUV gets an electric sunroof, 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, traction control, hill hold, cruise control, reverse parking camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic dual zone climate control, powered driver’s seat, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay support, and connected car features. It’s built at Mahindra’s Chakan factory near Pune, alongside the range topping XUV700 luxury crossover.
