André 3000 Announces New Blue Sun Live Tour
André 3000 announced his tour in support of his praised solo album, New Blue Sun, on Tuesday. Formerly one-half of Atlanta rap duo Outkast, André 3000 will be joined by Carlos Niño, Nate Mercereau, Surya Botofasina, and Deantoni Parks, who helped craft the flute-fused album.
The tour runs from January 29 to March 9, with multiple-day stops in Brooklyn, New York; New York, New York; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; Atlanta, Georgia; and Los Angeles, California. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. ET.
André 3000’s New Blue Sun, released in November 2023, intersects ambient new age, jazz, and improv with experimental electronic music. The album, which has no raps or recognizable vocals from the “Hey Ya!” rapper, marks his first new record since Outkast’s 2006 Idlewind.
Rolling Stone called the 87-minute album “a gorgeous, deeply contemporary, prismatic breath of fresh incense.” The 12-minute serenade, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time,” marked the Billboard Hot 100’s longest-running title to get a mention — knocking Taylor Swift’s “All too Well (Taylor’s Version)” to third.
In early January, collaborators Botofasina, Mercereau, and Niño released their own album, Subtle Movements. In a GQ video cover story in November, André 3000 said he carried his flute everywhere: to the airport, to coffee shops, or to the streets of Philadelphia, and had no raps left to give, as the opening track describes.
“Even now, people think, Oh, man, he’s just sitting on raps, or he’s just holding these raps hostage. I ain’t got no raps like that,” André 3000 told GQ. “It actually feels…sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way. I’m 48 years old. And not to say that age is a thing that dictates what you rap about, but in a way it does.”
