Apple Announces macOS Ventura & Starts War On Passwords

0 71

At WWDC 2022 today, Apple announced macOS Ventura. Not Mammoth like many rumors had suggested. It’ll be available later this fall, with developer betas starting today.

The first big feature in macOS Ventura is Stage Manager. This is a feature that will help you better navigate through the many different windows you might have open. Stage Manager will move all of the app windows off to the side, and keep your main app window to the front of the screen. Making it easier to switch between apps, without using the dock.

Mail is also getting some updates here. Like “Undo Send”. So you can quickly undo a sent email if you forgot something or had a typo. Search is also getting improved in Mail. So you’ll see contacts, links, attachments and more.

The “World’s Fastest browser” gets updated too

Safari is adding Shared Tab Groups. Allowing you to share tabs with groups of people. So if you’re planning a vacation together, you can share the tabs and make it easier to plan that vacation. You’ll be able to see when they are looking at tabs in realtime too.

Passkeys is also debuting in Ventura, to replace passwords. It uses the biometrics built into your device to authenticate yourself. It will only work with the site it was created for, and it only works on that one device. Passkeys will work as easily in apps as they do on the web. It’s instantly available on Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple TV.

Apple is working with Microsoft and Google and the Fido Alliance to make Passkeys work.

Continuity

Apple is improving Continuity on macOS Ventura too. With Handoff, you’ll be able to handoff Facetime calls between devices. Just bring the device close to your Mac or iPad, and it’ll bring up a pop-up to switch over.

The company is also announcing that you’ll be able to use your iPhone as a webcam now, on Facetime. Giving you a much better video stream than you’d get from the webcam built into your MacBook or a third-party display. It’s called Continuity Camera. And there’s also Studio Light available, which will brighten up your face and darkening the background. Great for those hard-lit areas. Like being near a window with sunlight.

Continuity Camera works with Facetime, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and more. Apple is working with Belkin to make stands for your iPhone to sit on your MacBook or monitor.

When is macOS Ventura going to be available?

It’ll be available this fall, with a developer beta opening up later today. The public beta will likely open up later this summer – usually around July or August. macOS Ventura will likely come out in October ahead of their usual October Mac event.
