Apple’s iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Plus could finally feature 120Hz LTPO OLED displays, claims report

Apple iPhone 17 and 17 Plus to come with LTPO panels

  • According to a report by The Elec, the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus are likely to come with LTPO OLED panels with a refresh rate of 120Hz.
  • This will be a significant leap, as the non-pro models of the iPhone series have always featured an OLED panel capped at 60Hz.
  • Another key thing to consider is that the new panel is predicted to be an LTPO panel, which means an adaptive refresh rate that can go from as high as 120Hz, to as low as 1Hz.
  • With an LTPO display, the panel will also bring always-on-display functionality to the non-pro iPhone models, which showcases all the relevant information on the display without additional battery cost.
  • Always-on display will improve the battery life of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus smartphones, which is a big upgrade.
  • This change, however, depends on BOE, a display manufacturer that also supplies LTPO panels to Huwaei.
  • As per The Elec, BOE sent some display samples to Apple last year, but the iPhone 16 non-pro models are unlikely to receive the LTPO panels due to the time constraint.
  • The BOE panels will also undergo Apple’s display test, and thus the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus are more realistic targets for the LTPO panel implementation.
