Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen are adopting Tesla’s NACS plug for EVs
Volkswagen Group has announced that Audi, Porsche, Scout Motors, and Volkswagen will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS), which was developed by Tesla, for their future electric vehicles (EVs) in the North American Region.
According to the conglomerate, these companies will offer the NACS connector on their EVs from 2025, which will allow people to charge those vehicles with any charger that offers an NACS connector, including those installed at the Tesla Supercharger and Mercedes-Benz Charging Hub charging networks. As for the existing EVs from Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen, these companies are developing adapters that will allow people to charge these vehicles using the NACS connector.
What is NACS and why is every car manufacturer adopting it?
In 2012, Tesla developed a proprietary charging standard, which it has been offering on all its electric vehicles, including the Model S, Model X, Model Y, Model 3, and Cybertruck. Almost ten years later, in November 2022, Tesla named this charging standard North American Charging Standard (NACS) and opened it up to other manufacturers.
Since then, several car manufacturers have adopted this charging standard, including BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, and Toyota, to establish one charging standard for electric vehicles in the region. This move will allow people to charge cars from different manufacturers using a single connector. Volkswagen is the latest addition to that list. Now, Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, Ram, and many other brands, is the only major brand that hasn’t adopted the NACS.
